Writer Jean Cocteau and director Jean-Pierre Melville joined forces for this elegant adaptation of Cocteau’s immensely popular, wicked novel about the wholly unholy relationship between a brother and sister. Elisabeth (a remarkable Nicole Stéphane) and Paul (Edouard Dermithe) close themselves off from the world by playing an increasingly intense series of mind games with the people who dare enter their lair—until romance and jealousy intrude. Melville’s operatic camera movements and Cocteau’s perverse, poetic approach to character merge in Les enfants terribles to create one of French cinema’s greatest, and most surprising, meetings of the minds.

Jean Debart, musicien, élève seul d'une main de fer ses enfants. Alexandre, onze ans, pianiste soliste virtuose, se plie apparemment sans broncher aux exigences paternelles. Adèle, brillante violoncelliste a des envies de liberté. Alors qu'elle prépare les concours musicaux les plus réputés, elle tombe amoureuse de son accompagnateur, Thomas. Mais Jean Debart voit d'un mauvais oeil cette idylle, qui à coup sûr, va détourner sa fille de la musique.

Until now, Jacques Feyder has been unjustly reduced almost to a footnote in film history, but these beautifully-restored editions with stunning tints and new orchestral scores reveal him as one of the finest silent film directors in Europe. Following these accomplishments, Feyder was invited to Hollywood in 1929 to direct two outstanding films with Greta Garbo, The Kiss and the German version of Anna Christie, and to London for Marlene Dietrich in Knight without Armour; he is probably best remembered for Carnival in Flanders (La Kermesse heroique, 1935), which, unfortunately, was cut by about one-third for American release.

En 1940, un vieillard refuse de fuir. Bien que les nazis approchent, il choisit de rester chez lui avec ses petits-enfants. Des tirailleurs sénégalais arrivent. Quelque part dans les Ardennes françaises, en mai 1940, un vieil homme refuse de prendre la fuite face aux troupes allemandes déjà proches. Le vieux Gustave est en effet la tête de mule du village. Il vit là avec Camille et Etienne, ses petits-enfants. Tous les habitants des alentours ont quitté la région. Mais l'adolescente et le garçonnet aiment tant leur grand-père qu'ils ne le laisseraient seul pour rien au monde. Très content de vivre dans le village désormais désert, Gustave est agacé lorsqu'un peloton de tirailleurs sénégalais arrive. Egarés, les soldats africains doivent faire face à la méfiance du vieil homme. Mais les enfants sont ravis de les voir arriver et rompre ainsi leur solitude.

A study of minor events in the adolescence of a boy growing up in small towns. Daniel lives with his grandmother and, after one year of high school, has to go to live with his mother in the south of France. She is a seamstress living in a tiny apartment with her lover Jose, a Spanish farm worker. Daniel would like to continue school, but his mother cannot afford it, so she sends him to work as an apprentice in a moped repair shop. Daniel wiles away his time in the shop, and learns about girls from the other boys in town. When he returns to visit his grandmother next year, it is obvious that he has grown up faster than his old friends.
