My Sweet Orange Tree begins with José Mauro de Vasconcelos (Caco Ciocler) receiving an edition of his finished novel. Then, the film starts to tell the story from the writer's memories, through flashbacks. Zezé (João Guilherme Avila), a boy of eight years who lives in Minas Gerais in a very humble house with his family, consisting of his father (Eduardo Dascar), an unemployed and alcoholic, and his mother (Fernanda Vianna), which works to support the home and his brother and sisters. Despite the lack of understanding, affection and the aggression suffered by from his father and school colleagues, the boy has a great skill for storytelling using his imagination. With financial difficulties, the family has to move. At the new home, Zezé finds an orange tree, which he talks everyday. However, for being extremely extrovert he got involved in several confusions. One of them, he tries to ride on the bumper of Manoel Valadares, the "Portuga" (José de Abreu), but is caught and spanked.

The film follows two men living in a Rio de Janeiro slum. A black shoe-shiner tries to overcome financial obstacles. He plans on saving enough money to buy a bike and win the girl of his dreams. His stepfather's funeral takes away most of his savings. His solution is to borrow a priest's bike to achieve his goal. A white mill worker can't dissuade his wife from having a risky abortion due to their lack of income stability, and loses his son and his wife. Disgusted, he gets exasperated at work and leads his colleagues to file a lawsuit against the factory, becoming a class leader.

La dépression postnatale touche 15 à 20 % des femmes en France et en Allemagne, mais reste une maladie peu connue du grand public. Les mamans peuvent mal vivre leur maternité. Leur peur de ne pas être à la hauteur s’accompagne d’autres symptômes, tels l’épuisement, une profonde tristesse et une culpabilisation excessive. Il est alors difficile de s’en sortir sans aide extérieure. Mais nombre d’entre elles craignent d’avouer ce qu’elles ressentent, parce qu’elles ont honte de ne pas correspondre à l’archétype de la mère modèle. S’ensuit une spirale infernale qui aboutit à une grande détresse et à une perte de repères.
