The Brecker Brothers join forces for a set of mostly high-powered originals at a concert in 2003. Their post-bop music is generally funky (although "Freefall" is an uptempo cooker) and sometimes a bit bombastic yet is never predictable. Trumpeter Randy Brecker and tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker take many fiery solos while also sounding warm on ballads. They are supported by a particularly strong rhythm section. In addition, the WDR Big Band contributes 14 horns and a guitar to accompany the core group. The individual songs may not be overly memorable (although "Some Skunk Funk" has been getting covered by other musicians) but the Breckers' solos are full of exciting moments.

German-born composer and arranger Claus Ogerman, born in 1930, must rank as one of the most versatile musicians of the twentieth century. When he was at his peak in the 1970s, writing everything from ballet scores to arrangements for Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim, diva Barbra Streisand, and jazz/R&B saxophonist George Benson, there was hardly a radio station on the dial where his music wasn't heard during the course of a typical day – and he's still quite active. The key to his success has been his ability to stay in the background behind the musician he's working with and yet create something distinctive…

This overly long quartet-plus-strings session is Charlie Haden's paean to an ideal America, made during a time that was ripe for such reflections. The band, with Haden on bass, Michael Brecker on tenor, Brad Mehldau on piano, and Brian Blade on drums, is unassailably strong. But listeners could have lived without the ear-candy sheen provided by the 34-piece orchestra, arranged primarily by Alan Broadbent, with additional contributions from Jeremy Lubbock and Vince Mendoza. (Broadbent and Mendoza also penned charts for Jane Monheit's In the Sun, released two weeks earlier.) Aside from outright banalities like "America the Beautiful" and "It Might Be You" (yes, the Stephen Bishop lite-radio hit), there are some saving graces, like Keith Jarrett's "Prism" and "No Lonely Nights," Mehldau's "Ron's Place," and Haden's two originals, "American Dreams" and "Nightfall."

Old Folks is a collaborative album between Kenny Garrett, John Scofield, Michael Brecker and David Friesen. However, as one website indicates, this is not really an album as such but a series of grouped-together sessions recorded over a nearly seven-year stretch. This was released by West Wind,

This is a very special performance by one of the most popular jazz groups of the early 1980’s. Taped amidst the works of Rodin,Thorvaldsen and countless Roman sculptures, the band plays in the atrium of this world famous sculpture museum - the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. It was a comfortable, inspiring location for the musicians and the tracks were personally mixed by the band leader Mike Mainieri.

Although he had been a major tenor saxophonist in the studios for nearly 20 years and was quite popular for his work with the Brecker Brothers, this MCA/Impulse set was Michael Brecker's first as a leader. Playing in a quintet with guitarist Pat Metheny, keyboardist Kenny Kirkland, bassist Charlie Haden, and drummer Jack DeJohnette, Brecker performs three of his originals, two by producer Don Grolnick, and Mike Stern's "Choices." The music in general is straight-ahead but far from predictable; the tricky material really challenges the musicians and Michael Brecker is in consistently brilliant form, constantly stretching himself.

Tenor sax legend Michael Brecker is justifiably showcased on this sophisticated, large ensemble release. Brecker's playing is supremely focused here, moving from tender lyricism ("Angle of Repose") to Coltrane-esque runs to the outer registers ("Cool Day In Hell"), and touching on everything in between. Like his range on the sax, Brecker's compositions veerfrom the coolly cerebral to dramatic intensity. "Timbuktu" appropriates a skewed Latin boogie to anchor its cyclical melodic leads, which Brecker expands and reassembles in his solos. The in-pocket jazz-funk of "Night Jessamine" rubs against the rhythmic kaleidoscope of "Brexterity" and the floating pulse of "Evening Faces".

October 18, 1987 was a very special day for the two brothers Michael Brecker& Randy Brecker. For years both had conquered the stages of the world together with their band Brecker Brothers and earned the reputation of being among the world´s leading jazz musicians on their instruments, the saxophone and the trumpet. On that evening in the legendary Hamburg factory, both were on stage together for the first time, each with their own band.
