The award-winning Greenwich Trio, comprising Slovenian violinist Lana Trotovšek, Canadian cellist Heather Tuach and Japanese pianist Yoko Misumi, makes its debut on Linn with a recording of Brahms Piano Trios. Pairing Op. 36 with Op. 87, this is the first instalment in a complete trios cycle. Although a string sextet in its original Brahmsian guise, Op. 36 was brilliantly arranged for piano trio by Theodor Kirchner, a contemporary and friend of Johannes. The second of Brahms’s three trios, Op. 87 is a mature work which sees the composer at the height of his compositional writing. Its highly Romantic leaning combined with its Classical structure calls for the sort of sharp skills the Greenwich Trio has in abundance. Having delighted audiences throughout Europe (Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, London’s Kings Place, Rheingau Musik Festival, among others) this debut is eagerly-awaited.

Another one of cpo's admirable series devoted to less familiar composers, the Heinrich Herzogenberg coverage seems to have ambitions of achieving something like completeness. Herzogenberg (1843-1900) is hardly a familiar name to concert-goers these days, but he is a composer worth discovering if not one who ranks among the greatest or most original composers of his day. The Mass op.87 was composed in 1894 and originally thought lost, and it is dense and dramatic and heavily contrapuntal - quite some distance removed from the music of his friend Brahms. To get an idea of what it is like, it may be worth mentioning that it was composed in memory of the Bach scholar Spitta, and though the musical language is definitely cut from the romanticism of his day, the connection may to some extent account for Herzogenberg penchant for employing fugues as well as for much of the textural character.

Two factors should disqualify this disc immediately. First, the pieces are incomplete and out of order. Second, and arguably more crucially, the pianist misses handfuls of notes in nearly every selection and bucketfuls of notes in some. But some listeners won't care about these things because of the miracle of Sviatoslav Richter. What in another pianist would be grounds for dismissal is here cause for celebration. Check out Richter's Shostakovich: the mysterious colors of his F minor Prelude and Fugue, the fleet virtuosity of his A minor Prelude and Fugue, or the intensity of his E minor Prelude and Fugue.

The Jubilee Quartet follow their critically acclaimed debut album of Haydn (RCD1039) with two contrasting quartets by Schubert. The sunny and joyful D.87, his 10th quartet dates from his 16th year. Already the singing quality of the writing is apparent. The late G Major quartet, the composer’s 15th and final quartet dates from 1826. The emotions here are extreme – dramatic, violent, painful, menacing, introverted and innocent. Written on a large scale, this work is a groundbreaking masterpiece that stands shoulder to shoulder with the late Beethoven quartets.
