It would be difficult to overestimate the impact of Paul Cezanne’s works on the histories of French, European and American art. Pablo Picasso described him as a “mother hovering over” and Henri Matisse called him a “father to us.” However, it wasn’t until the turn of the 20th century that the significance of the French painter’s works began to be recognized. Cézanne is now considered a leading figure in the post-impressionist movement and a profound influence on the course of modern art.

Sommer 1989 - Monate des Aufbruchs und Protests, des Neuanfangs und des Abschieds. Es beginnt der Zerfall des DDR-Regimes. Die Menschen begehren auf, Zehntausende fliehen aus dem Land. Immer mehr Menschen schließen sich den Massendemonstrationen an, immer lauter werden die Rufe nach Reformen. An das Ende der DDR glaubt allerdings noch niemand. Letztendlich gelingt es der Kraft des Volkes, die Mauer einzureißen. Eine friedliche Revolution beendet die Zeit des Kalten Krieges.

Andreas Dresen's tragicomic movie focuses on two women and their daily struggle for survival during a summer in Berlin. Katrin, a jobless single mum, and Nike, a nurse, live in the same house and are best friends. Although always dating the wrong men and still pursuing for happiness, they don't lose their humor and spend many nights together on Nike's balcony, drinking and chatting. However, Nike gets to know the trucker Ronald one day……

Anna is the Jewish daughter of a Spanish mother and a Greek father. She has returned to her family's house in Greece after many of her friends and family members have died over the years. Although she came back to the house in order to sell it, things begin to take a different direction: The house itself, the furniture and other equipment in it seem to become alive for Anna, recalling images of her past, her beloved parents and her friend Max, who once gave her shelter from the raging policemen when she took part as a photo journalist in a political demonstration in Berlin. Anna changes her mind: When some rich, ignorant American couple wondering about if they should buy the house asks for the swimming pool (while the Mediterranean is half a mile away), she simply doubles the charge, and finally puts the "For sale" plate into the garbage can. In the meantime, she has had a little love affair with a young man from the village, found a girlfriend from her childhood days, swum in the sea…
