Michael Gira’s Swans have announced a new album, Leaving Meaning, due out on October 25. It’s Swans’ 15th studio album and their first since 2016’s The Glowing Man.

Forty-five years after his first solo piano recording, 'Hubris' for ECM Records, Brooklyn-born Richie Beirach returns to that intimate and revealing setting on 'Leaving'.

Just Like Leaving bears a powerful authenticity that prompted Rolling Stone to praise White's songwriting as "sublime Appalachian heartbreak." In sculpting the album's sparse but lushly detailed sound, White worked with a lineup of musicians she encountered through years of making the rounds at roots-music festivals, including Reed Stutz on mandolin/vocals; Julian Pinelli on fiddle/vocals, and Robert Alan Mackie on bass.

Leaving Eden, Carolina Chocolate Drop's second full-length Nonesuch disc, was produced by Nashville stalwart Buddy Miller, the go-to guy for artists ranging from Solomon Burke to Robert Plant to Emmylou Harris. On this 15-song collection, recorded live in the studio with all the players in a single room, the Carolina Chocolate Drops illustrate their own adaptability to grow and change. Following the amicable departure of founding member Justin Robinson, band mates Rhiannon Giddens and Dom Flemons recruited three exceptional new players for the recording and expanded their repertoire to incorporate more overt blues and jazz elements and straight-up folk balladry alongside brilliantly rendered string-band tunes.

Russian-born, North Carolina-based composer Yelena Eckemoff consistently releases material that is deeply thought provoking and reflective. This time out, she leads a team with all stars Billy Hart, Ben Street and for added exoticism, violinist Mark Feldman through a collection of originals. Delicately delivered strong material. The songs are impressionistic and filled with water colors of sound.

This year, Footprint Records celebrates 15 years. Per Sjösten, who started the company together with his friend Bo Ejeby in 2003, presents the record company and explains why, despite the Göteborg Post's description of the record company as "narrower than narrow", it seems that the catalog is actually quite wide. That the record company's website has the subtitle Sustainable music ("sustainable music") is no coincidence …

Anathema have spent the vast majority of their career making music that defies description. Formed in the mid 90s, they have risen to become one of the UK's most cherished and critically acclaimed rock bands. Led by brothers Daniel and Vincent Cavanagh, Anathema recorded "The Optimist" in winter 2016 at Attica Studio in Donegal and Castle of Doom Studios in Glasgow with producer Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Belle & Sebastian, Super Furry Animals) at the helm. Doogan's influence is instantly tangible; for the first time in years Anathema recorded as a live band for an album, capturing an energy normally only present on stage.
