Monsieur Camembert's interpretations traverse styles rarely if ever associated with Cohen, including Hot Swing, free-jazz, tango, latin, klezmer etc etc. So what prompted Camembert to do Cohen? Yaron Hallis, leader of the group, explains for years our most requested song has been Cohens Dance Me To The End Of Love, and many fans have suggested we do a whole night of Cohen. Its quite thrilling to finally take on this body of material, and be joined by guest singers I so greatly admire, who on the most cerebral and instinctive level, connect with and interpret his songs with such raw beauty there are lots of Australian singers I was tempted to approach for the show, but very few had the quality in their voice that I felt was especially suited to interpret his music. With Cohen, absolutely every word counts, and for the material to really work, there has to be vulnerability, sensuality and complete emotional truth.

Monsieur Blumenberg is the nom de plume of Federico Montefiori, twin brother of Francesco, and one half of Italy's legendary lounge duo, Montefiori Cocktail. Monsieur Blumenberg's first release in 2001 - Musique et Couleurs - was a wonderful, experimental, electronic lounge symphony. Compositions such as L'Altra Sera al Ristorante, Sciabadabada, Caprice des Dieux and Escamotage mixed with some interesting sampling created a fun, compelling, aural adventure into the land of the musical unknown.

Monsieur Camembert is the fourth album from Australian Gypsy fusion band Monsieur Camembert. Released in March 2005, it won the 2005 ARIA Award for Best World Music Album. Monsieur Camembert is a five-piece Gypsy fusion band formed in Sydney, Australia in 1997. They have won three ARIA Music Awards for Best World Music Album in 2002 for Live on Stage (released in 2001), in 2003 for Absynthe and in 2005 for Monsieur Camembert. The linguistic repertoire of Monsieur Camembert's music includes English, Russian, Hebrew and Yiddish.

The successful film Tous les matins du monde had the undisputed merit of bringing the world’s attention to the figure of Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe and to the viola da gamba in general, since Sainte-Colombe provided substantial contributions to the repertoire of this instrument. Still, the film’s plot was explicitly (and fully legitimately) grounded on a fictional work, a novel telling the history of Sainte-Colombe with references to what was, by then, known about him. Fortunately, a virtuous circle was ignited by the film, prompting new and meticulous research on his figure and effectively bringing to light some hard facts about his life.

How can one account better than Rousseau himself of all that Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe has brought to the viola da gamba, whether it be at the instrumental level (adding the 7th string that gives more depth to the sonority, The silver-plated strings that allow articulated and precise play even on the bass strings), but also an important development of the technique which gives the instrument a palette of sound of a finesse and a sensibility approaching the human voice . It is thanks to these decisive contributions that a school of viola da gamba was able to develop in France, Marais, Couperin and Forqueray being the most prestigious representatives. It seems important to me to pay tribute to this musician of the shadow of whom we are all still the heirs, as his son but also Marin Marais did in their time by dedicating to him two magnificent tombs.
