Meaning all things magick and supernatural, the root of the word occult is that which is hidden, concealed, beyond the limits of our minds. If this is occult, then the Occult Architecture of Moon Duo’s fourth album - a psychedelic opus in two separate volumes released in 2017 - is an intricately woven hymn to the invisible structures found in the cycle of seasons and the journey of day into night, dark into light.
Stars Are the Light, the luminous seventh album by the American psych explorers Moon Duo, marks a progression into significantly new territory. From a preoccupation with the transcendental and occult that informed Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada’s guitar-driven psych rock, and reached its apotheosis in the acclaimed Occult Architecture diptych, Stars Are the Light sees the band synthesize the abstract and metaphysical with the embodied and terrestrial.
With their new CD "Hymne à l'amour" the Duo Minerva shows once again how exciting and multifaceted classical music can sound. The arrangements made with great artistry, their virtuosity and their exceptionally emotional musical style breathe fresh life into often heard works. With a lot of playfulness, the well-rehearsed duo moves between a wide variety of genres and combines classical masterpieces with contemporary avant-garde, folk music and a pinch of the yet unheard of on the subject of love - completely in Duo Minerva style.
The voice and violin duo Duo della Luna (Susan Botti and Airi Yoshioka, respectively) brings a remarkable versatility and integrated ensemble approach to a rarefied instrumental combination. Both musicians take advantage of their impressive range to broaden the scope of expressive possibilities within this duo formation. On Mangetsu, that range is in full bloom, from Botti’s fluid text delivery in different languages and vocal styles to both performers’ virtuosic navigation of extended techniques and gymnastic passagework. Throughout, the duo is engaged in a intertwined dialogue between the two players, always balanced elegantly, with each fulfilling an equal and essential role in the musical texture. Their sensitive performances are captured in a sensual recording by Grammy award winning engineer and recording industry luminary Todd Whitelock.
Sulatron with a real neo-krautrock album with all the typical ingredients, such as long tracks, guitarfreakouts, totally kosmik effect orgies, double drumming and out of this world atmosphere. Both bands met for a concert together as one band at 20th of September 2019 in the kultclub Sabotage in Lisbon. Sadly the Sabotage has not survived the corona lockdown. Electric Moon is Germany's beloved psychedelic rockband, who played all over Europe and released so many albums. Talea Jacta is one of Portugal's best kept secrets. The duo of Joao Pais Filipe on drums and percussions, and Pedro Pestana, the guitarwizard of 10000 Russos, on guitar, is just breathtaking! They both are well known musicians and are touring around the globe! Joao is also very famous for handcrafting gongs and percussions of stunning beauty! The combination with their friends Electric Moon makes this release (and of course their concerts together) a very unique thing! This is real psychedelic underground!
Because cornetist Rob Mazurek and drummer Chad Taylor both come from the jazz sphere, it's usually tempting to lump their collective work as Chicago Underground Duo in that particular genre. The problem is it is only one of the elements that CUD employs in the music they've made over the last 15 years together. Age of Energy, the group's debut on Northern Spy, is a case in point. In addition to a drum kit, Taylor plays a drum machine and other electronics.
Little Hurricane, big impact. The two-piece rock outfit from San Diego, California celebrates the release of their third album Same Sun Same Moon on April 14, a studio effort that continues the duo’s tradition of maintaining a full-band sound and shows lyrical and musical growth since their last release in 2014…
