Jeff Coffin's work with Bela Fleck's Flecktones has only been somewhat reflective of his efforts as a leader. The saxophonist/composer is quite able in a more progressive, accessibly contemporary style to express his personalized music, which is in many ways substantive and cleverly rendered. While recent efforts have veered toward a commercialized approach, this CD with his Mu'tet bears distinct elements of the Jazz Crusaders and the first bands of Derek Trucks. No doubt the addition of a stout horn section on a few selections, and collaboration with the keyboardist and flute player Kofi Burbridge - well known for his work with the Trucks band - has a lot to do with how this group reacts and responds.

In 2004, Jean-Guihen Queyras and the Freiburger Barockorchester offered us a prodigious interpretation of Haydn’s two cello concertos, coupled with a rare concerto by Georg Matthias Monn, a pioneer of the genre. A version now recognized as a landmark in the discography.

Again Rather Interesting presents the result of a collaboration that already proved their skills. This time under the name 'Masters of Psychedelic Ambience', Tetsu Inoue and Atom Heart produced the CD entitled 'Mu'. The Japanese word 'Mu' stands for 'emptyness' but more in a spiritual sense. The music on 'Mu' stands for innovative ambience' that is far away from all kinds of cliches we know so far. 'Mu' contains 27 titles that reach from chilling monochrome tones to weird layered dub grooves de-synchronizing your perception, drifting and spaced out. Some people say 'Mu' refers to 'trip' experiences but 'Rather Interesting' of course denies the connection to any kind of drugs.

3 pianos is an album made by a unique piano ensemble consisting of three musicians with different backgrounds and experience. The curiosity for the piano and its countless possibilities was the outset whereas the wish to bend the common boundaries for piano music was the background for this project. The ensemble makes music with clear connections to the music and the ideas of the twentieth century. The musicians develop the material in their own way by focusing on elements like tuning, register, intervals and dynamics. The material includes both written compositions and improvised pieces. The trio has a sophisticated way of instant-composing, and this quality reflects both the musicians individuality as well as there orientation towards interplay.

We've heard of quartets, quintets, sextets, etc, but "mu'tet"s? That's the multi-saxophonist's way of covering the many different ensemble switches and guest personnel appearing on this wildly wonderful, genre-defying effort, which was made possible by the hiatus of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, of which Jeff Coffin has been a member of since 1997. The energy of the up-tempo tracks - which range from the brassy New Orleans "second line" party tunes "Move Your Rug" and "Better Do Your Thing" to the hip-hop soul-jazz of "The Mad Hatter Rides Again" - is so intense that you never want it to come down.
