Merge Records release Pigments, the debut collaboration between New Orleans electro-revival dynamo Dawn Richard and multi-instrumentalist, producer, and composer Spencer Zahn. Pigments is a project about the power of self-expression through living art, through motion. It’s also a love letter to New Orleans, Louisiana. Not strictly classical, jazz or ambient electronica but rather a body of “movements,” it is an expressive soundscape that is an immersive passage through the city as seen through the eyes of a young Black girl with dreams to paint her future with the pigments given to her.

The Steinway Classics series continues with Chopin’s four poetic impromptus in captivating performances by American pianist Spencer Myer.

Martha Spencer is a singer-songwriter, mountain musician and dancer from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. She grew up in the musical Spencer family and from a very young age has been dancing (flatfoot/clog), singing, and playing guitar, fiddle, banjo, bass, dulcimer, and mandolin.

In 1688, the Jesuit college Louis-le-Grand staged David et Jonathas, a lyrical tragedy written by Marc-Antoine Charpentier. Intended for the school’s students and interspersed with the Latin tragedy Saul, it depicted the fratricidal friendship of David and Jonathas, at the mercy of an implacable fate and a cruel struggle for power.

Musique des Lumières commissioned five composers to create works based on the enigmatic poems of Joseph Brodsky, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1987, highlighted by the magical voices of soprano Laurence Guillod and baritone Pierre-Yves Pruvot. The resulting programme forms the latest edition of the «Music & Words» series, which commissions works inspired by great literary authors of our time. Following the editions on Julio Cortázar and Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Joseph Brodsky is the third album in this series. After the CD recording in collaboration with the label IBS Classical and the successful premiere in June 2022, Musique des Lumières is now embarking on a tour.

The Dürrenmatt Project is the multifaceted tribute with which Facundo Agudín and Musique des Lumières want to vindicate the figure of a protean and committed artist: from Pflüger’s thrilling tragicomedy Jedes Kunstwerk ist apokalyptisch – oder Bach und Dürrenmatt (Every work of art is apocalyptic – or Bach and Dürrenmatt) to the sardonic and imaginative score of The Minotaure by Genessey-Rappo, passing through the discourse between the atavistic and the experimental of Respiro (Breathe) by Pérez-Ramírez and the mystical and textural sonority of Stoff by Sontòn Caflisch. These four scores highlight Dürrenmatt as a writer and a visual artist; in short, one of the most authentic and respected thinkers of the 20th century.

Wolf Parade's Spencer Krug has announced new solo album Fading Graffiti which will be out April 16 via his own helpfully named label, Pronounced Kroog. The album takes songs that originated as piano ballads on Krug's Patreon in 2019 and recontextualizes them as indie rock. This is also Krug's first album under his own name, having previously worked under his Moonface solo guise and Sunset Rubdown. The first single is Fading Graffiti's title track, which is pretty terrific – swooning and odd, and maybe just a little like Destroyer's more guitar-centric records.
