By the late 1960s Bakersfield, California was a West Coast country music mecca that, thanks to the hits of Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, challenged Nashville's dominance of the industry. The so-called Bakersfield Sound first emerged from the clubs of California's Central Valley where oil workers and day laborers went to dance. In stark contrast to the passive experience of sitting and listening to music at the Grand Ole Opry, Bakersfield bands incorporated elements of swing, rock and roll, blues, and pop, with the goal of keeping the patrons on the dance floor.

This new West Side Story, the first American-based recording to appear since DG’s star-studded 1985 composer-conducted version, blessedly avoids that earlier production’s operatic pretensions, returning instead to the work’s Broadway roots by using young, theatrically trained singers with some genuine acting ability. Even with that, it’s probably wishful thinking to expect that this cast (fine as it is) can recreate the vibrant, raw freshness and scintillating brilliance of the original. Mike Eldred’s Tony comes off best; singing with a more mature sound than Larry Kert, he nonetheless creates a sense of heightened expectancy and wonder in “Something’s Coming”.

A Nashville-based singer, songwriter, and guitarist who blends good old rock & roll with a bit of country. His distinctive writing, expressive vocals and fiery guitar playing drew immediate attention in and beyond his Southern California home. Critics compared him to Bob Dylan - not at all unfavorably. Spirited, rough-edged, raw and passionate, yet eloquent and impeccably crafted, these 12 tracks confirm that Street-West is back and ready to begin that journey with an explosive liftoff.
