For Russian musicians, the romances of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov have always been a test of their artistic maturity. Even the name of the genre has many shades of meaning in Russian and sometimes denotes very different forms of musical expressions. The vocal chamber music works of these two composers, who are usually mentioned in the same breath as the luminaries of Russian music, indeed show the enormous range of artistic expression of their creators.

“Jazz blossoms with deep roots” is how the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper summarised a concert appearance of Natalia Mateo. This 1983 born vocalist is a wanderer between the worlds - musically and in real life. Born in Poland, raised in Austria and now living in Germany, she has absorbed the most varied of impressions and cultures into her being: She draws from the Slavic ballad tradition, from American jazz and singer-songwriters ranging from Joni Mitchell to Amy MacDonald, and from contemporary pop and rock music.

Natalia Sokolovskaya (Russian: Наталья Соколовская; born in June, 1989) is a Russian pianist and composer.

This new release is a unique interpretation of some of the finest works in the chamber music repertoire: violinist Natalia Lomeiko, violist Yuri Zhislin and pianist Ivan Martin perform trios by Brahms, Bruch and Schubert. Described by The Strad as a “virtuoso with a truly romantic temperament”, Yuri Zhislin recorded his first Orchid Classics album with The Russian Virtuosi of Europe (now Camerata Tchaikovsky), hailed as BBC Music Magazine’s orchestral album of the month in April 2016. Both Zhislin and Natalia Lomeiko are Russian artists who are currently professors at the Royal College of Music, and they are joined by the versatile Ivan Martin on the piano. The trio performs the glorious Trio Op.40 by Brahms, originally featuring a type of hunting horn; Bruch’s autumnal Eight Pieces, written for viola, clarinet and piano, and Schubert’s wonderful Nocturne, conceived for violin, cello and piano. Hearing these works for a different combination of instruments sheds new light on the music, making this a fascinating and essential album.
