Following up to her recording of piano concertos by J.N. Hummel and Beethoven, Austrian pianist Ingrid Marsoner is now presenting her interpretations of late piano sonatas by Beethoven. Marsoner's subtle yet vigorous play is opening with the Sonata No. 28 in A major, Op. 101. The Rondo alla ingharese, quasi un capriccio, Op. 129 i sbetter known by its popular name ''Rage Over a Lost Penny'' and is as an early work like the ''lighter'' Sonata No. 24 in F sharp major, Op. 78, a welcoming intermezzo and an interesting contrast to the somewhat more profound late sonatas. As such the Sonata No. 32 in C minor, Op. 111 symbolizes this world and the hereafter with its two very dissenting movements.

Written in 1950-51, Shostakovich's 24 Preludes and Fugues are an obvious answer to those who know you, especially since the composer got there after being a jury in the first edition of the competition, You know in Leipzig. For this contest, the young Tatiana Nikolayeva won the prizes and the votes, and it was for her that Shostakovich conceived her own cycle. Unlike the Preludes and Fugues by Bach (here, cited here), which follow each other by following the "suite of the fifths" with alternating major and minor tones according to their relative harmonic relations. In other words, if the first pair is in C major, the second is in C minor, C minor, G major, C major. While in Le Clavier well tempered, the first is in C major, the second in C minor, the third in C sharp major, rising one semitone chromatic each time. Neither system has more validity than the other, of course; What matters is the architectural rigor, the foundation of the idea.

Vassilis Tsabropoulos (born 1967 in Athens) is an internationally acclaimed Greek concert pianist conductor and composer. Tsabropoulos studied at Juilliard with Rudolf Serkin and Tatjana Nikolayeva. Simultaneously and with the encouragement of Chick Corea, he began to improvise in jazz contexts and he's followed parallel paths ever since. Tsabropoulis has an extraordinarily beautiful and expressive touch. Perhaps a little surprisingly, he sounds like a relaxed, fluent, unselfconscious improviser, entirely comfortable with what many classical musicians find a fundamentally different musical philosophy.

Classical music for children has been an underserved genre, even though nothing could be more beneficial to the cause of bringing the music to future generations. Any such release is worthy of note, but one like this, charming and original, is cause for celebration. Pianist Jenny Lin organizes for children some favorite compositions and a few delightful rarities along a timeline "from breakfast to bedtime." There are 26 short pieces, enough to give a feel for the variety and importance of this tradition in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Along the way you get Chopsticks, which you may not have known was an actual composition with an actual composer (female, at that), former chestnuts like Grieg's Grandmother's Minuet, the utterly charming I Danced with a Mosquito by Anatoly Liadov, ragtime and jazz works, and, to end, starlight familiar (Mozart) and more rare (Selim Palmgren), plus the famed cradle songs of Brahms and Chopin. Lin and the engineers from the Steinway label create a magical atmosphere, amplified by excellent children's illustrations in the booklet by Mikela Prevost. An ideal holiday, or anytime, gift item.

Their collaboration started back in 2002 and since then the musicians have demonstrated their outstanding professional mastery and complete unanimity in emotional and stylistic rendition of music. Alexander Zagorinsky is a representative of Natalia Shakhovskaya's Moscow school and former concertmaster of the group of cellos of the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. The musician's extensive repertoire includes music of four centuries. In the opinion of authoritative sources, Norwegian pianist Einar Steen-Nøkleberg is the best interpreter of Grieg's music who combines his solo career with active teaching. The difference in age and traditions did not prevent them from forming an ideal team where both are quick to understand each other.

Russia is vast, and so is this 25-disc tribute to the great piano school of Russia-from the long-famous icons to the more recent inheritors of this ineffably proud tradition. Vladimir Horowitz, Sviatoslav Richter, Emil Gilels, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Lazar Berman and many others display their subtly various approaches to phrasing and timbre as they perform the great works of the Russian canon and composers across Europe. Monumental works like the first piano concertos of both Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev sit alongside intimate salon pieces like Tchaikovsky's The Seasons and rarely heard works such as the preludes of Kabalevsky. Many of these rapturously beautiful performances are rare and have never been available on CD!
