Written in 1950-51, Shostakovich's 24 Preludes and Fugues are an obvious answer to those who know you, especially since the composer got there after being a jury in the first edition of the competition, You know in Leipzig. For this contest, the young Tatiana Nikolayeva won the prizes and the votes, and it was for her that Shostakovich conceived her own cycle. Unlike the Preludes and Fugues by Bach (here, cited here), which follow each other by following the "suite of the fifths" with alternating major and minor tones according to their relative harmonic relations. In other words, if the first pair is in C major, the second is in C minor, C minor, G major, C major. While in Le Clavier well tempered, the first is in C major, the second in C minor, the third in C sharp major, rising one semitone chromatic each time. Neither system has more validity than the other, of course; What matters is the architectural rigor, the foundation of the idea.
