Pop Rock, New Wave

After releasing two albums, one a perfect pop/rock-meets-new wave classic, the other a very good follow-up, the Cars were game to try things a little differently on their third album Panorama. With longtime collaborator Roy Thomas Baker behind the boards, the band decamped to the Power Station in New York City and began working on a set of songs that were a little less poppy, both structurally and sonically…

Heartbeat City is the fifth studio album by American rock band the Cars. It was released on March 13, 1984, by Elektra Records. The band produced the album along with Robert John "Mutt" Lange. Picking up a positive commercial response, the Cars had many tracks getting airplay, and singles "Drive" and "You Might Think" in particular both reached the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. The album also received favorable reviews from several critics; for example, Robert Christgau stated that "the glossy approach the Cars invented has made this the best year for pure pop in damn near twenty, and it's only fair that they should return so confidently to form."

Formed in the Rhondda Valley, South Wales in 1975, Racing Cars comprised Graham Headley Williams (guitar), Gareth ‘Monty’ Mortimer (vocals/guitar), Ray ‘Alice’ Ennis (guitar), David Land (bass) and Robert Wilding (drums). Released by Chrysalis Records, their albums also included bit-parts for session pianist Geraint Watkins, American saxophonist Jerry Jumonville, the Bowles Brothers Band (on vocal harmonies). Reaching number 39 in the UK album list, the band’s 1977 debut Downtown Tonight also produced an unexpected UK Top 20 entry with the memorable ballad ‘They Shoot Horses Don’t They?’, named after the movie. No more hits were forthcoming but the band was sufficiently established in the colleges to issue two further albums. Mortimer worked as a session singer before re-forming Racing Cars in the late 80s. The revived unit toured Europe for several years and completed a new album, Bolt From The Blue, in 2000.

American art-rock was often stilted and lacking in humor until new wave arrived. This ranks as one of the best debut albums from a rock band. The Cars are filed under rock, but they are closer to power pop than any other genre. Ric Ocasek sounded like a cross between the Raspberries and Television, punk sound with a pop attitude. Liberated by the influence of the Velvet Underground, Roxy Music and punk-era fellow travelers like Blondie and Suicide, the Cars methodically linked hookiness (enough to produce three hit singles and several other FM favorites from this debut album) and at least one raised eyebrow. The result still plays as a rock & roll classic. And if charm wasn't their aim, the fact is, it's undeniable. In 2003, the album was ranked number 282 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
