Fairytales" (Swedish "sagolikt") is a concert program by Nordic Light Duo inspired by the wonderful fairy tale world of the popular children's book author Elsa Beskow. Devotedly and lovingly designed, Beskow's fairy tales and illustrations run like a thread through the musical delightful experiences in it. The program is divided into five sections, each representing a fairy tale: Flower Festival in Täppan, The Story of the Curious Perch, Putte's Adventure in the Blueberry Forest, The Journey to the Land of Long ago, and The Sun Egg.

Northern light made the world look more clear and the colours became more intense. During the long and dark winter evenings I admired the way the people in Scandinavia had mastered the art of lighting their homes. Ever-present candles giving warm, natural light stood not only on windowsills, but also on pavements and streets, creating a mysterious, but also cosy atmosphere. Thanks to absence of curtains on most windows, the anonymous passenger of tram number 19 – running across the Majorstua district, could easily admire the stunning interiors of Scandinavian townhouses.

Anders Jormin’s new Swedish-Japanese project returns the highly distinctive voice of Lena Willemark to ECM – it’s her first appearance on the label in more than a decade - and introduces koto player Karin Nakagawa. In this trio music the Japanese classical tradition and the stark, archaic sounds of the koto, allied to Jormin’s powerful and subtle bass playing, form a unique context for Lena’s sung poems, delivered in her native Älvdals-dialect. Traditions and non-idiomatic improvising are cross-referenced and new paths opened up in these compositions.

Violinist Pekka Kuusisto and the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra present First Light, the first fruit of Kuusisto’s tenure as the ensemble’s Artistic Director, on which two eminent New York composers are cast in a Nordic light. The album offers the world premiere recording of Nico Muhly’s Shrink (Concerto for Violin and Strings), a unique, remotely-recorded rendition of Philip Glass’ The Orchard by Kuusisto and Muhly, and Kuusisto’s new string orchestra arrangement of Glass’ “Mishima” String Quartet No. 3.

The Nordic Christmas has nothing to do with pomp and kitsch, abundance and great gestures. She is family and traditional, draws her power from silence. Contemplation and concentration determines the most beautiful time of the year in the Scandinavian countries. And their music is a reflection of this quiet and intimate mood: whoever has fallen for the special musical charm of Scandinavian Christmas can now celebrate "Nordic Christmas" with Tore Brunborg and Kjetil Bjerkestrand. Not in a big cast, but in the unusual and intimate duo of saxophone and church organ. Almost magically, Tore Brunborg's unmistakably warm tone and Kjetil Bjerkestrands merge just as singular organ sounds, which use all the stops.

Nancy Dalberg (1881-1949) completed three string quartets, and they hold a place of their own among her compositions. No. 1 in D minor was the very first instrumental work that she presented at a public concert (1915). No. 2 in G minor, op. 14 (1922), was the first work that was published and played outside Denmark, while No. 3, op. 20 (1927), which is dedicated to her teacher, Carl Nielsen, was not published during her lifetime. The present release of the three quartets features two world premiere recordings. Nancy Dalberg is considered one of the first female composers in Denmark, and she was the first woman in Denmark to compose a symphony. This release sheds new light on one of the worlds finest female composers, who due to her lifetime never got the acknowledgement she deserved.

"Breath-taking", the "biggest surprise" of the five-day festival, "a discovery, very original, very exciting". Although the daily press and music journals are seldom in agreement, in this case they were united in their opinion. They heaped praise upon a big band that was up to that point virtually unknown outside their Norwegian homeland.
