Like any patchy but promising debut from a classic rock group, it's often easy to underrate Queen's eponymous 1973 debut, since it has no more than one well-known anthem and plays more like a collection of ideas than a cohesive album…

For the first time complete on CD: Charles Koechlin’s Music for Saxophone. Koechlin was an important composer and music theorist at the beginning of 20th century, living in Paris, the world’s hot spot for musical innovation. His music is inspired by the impressionistic style, which was much in vogue at that time, but it voices his unique personal language, in which oriental elements are fused. He was enchanted by the then new instrument of Adolphe Sax, the saxophone, and wrote extensively for this sonorous and seductive instrument.

Comparing his heroine, Tome Matsuki (played by Sachiko Hidari, who won the “Best Actress” award at the 1964 Berlin Film Festival for the role) to the restlessness and survival instincts of worker insects, the film is an unsparing study of working-class female life. Beginning with Tome’s birth in 1918, it follows her through five decades of social change, several improvised careers, and male-inflicted cruelty. Elliptically plotted, brimming over with black humour and taboo material, and immaculately staged in crystalline NikkatsuScope, The Insect Woman is arguably Imamura’s most radical and emphatic testament to female resilience.

This band came from a combination of musicians from North Carolina & South Carolina who rose from the same seeds that gave us the wonderful Uncle Walt’s Band (a blend of bluegrass harmonies & country music). This self-titled CD was originally recorded in Nashville, TN (1977) & initially produced by The Contenders & David Robert. There are 12 songs sculpted by 4 songwriters & lead vocalists who in unison managed to provide excellent musicality. The reissue was produced by Ben Runkle & Tommy Goldsmith & The Contenders (Drops July 28–Southern Moon Records) & is loaded with danceable story songs. It’s music for fun.

This 5xCD box set from Cherry Red offers a compelling look at shoegaze's prime era. Still in a Dream takes a wide trawl approach to its genre, which has upsides and downsides. As with Rhino’s goth box A Life Less Lived, shoegaze is generously interpreted to include antecedents and formative influences, which bulks up the quality.

In the summer of 2016, Jeff Beck celebrated 50 years of his musical career with a special concert at the famous Hollywood Bowl. The setlist reached back to his first recordings with The Yardbirds in 1966 and came right up to date with tracks from his most recent album Loud Hailer. As the evening progressed he was joined by many of the great musicians he has collaborated with over the years including Billy F. Gibbons, Buddy Guy, Jimmy Hall, Jan Hammer, Beth Hart and Steven Tyler. The show climaxed with the guests all joining forces for an exhilarating encore performance of Purple Rain in tribute to Prince, who had passed away a couple of months before the concert.
