These "Final Cuts" are an odds-and-sods collection of music Marc Bolan had been working on – and it's in various stages of completion – before he was killed in 1977. Some of the music here appears on other recordings of late cuts; some are reworkings of tunes or alternate takes of tracks that appeared on Futuristic Dragon or Dandy in the Underworld; some never appeared at all. You have to be a hardcore T. Rex and/or Bolan fan to want this music. There is a weird version of "To Know You Is to Love You" with a vocal by Gloria Jones (the disco star who was Bolan's wife), and the rest has either new tags, or more or less guitars, or reworked melodies. You get the picture. Usually Edsel is spot-on, but this is dodgy. About the only thing you can really compliment the compilation producers for is good-quality sound – it's top-notch for what it is.

At one point in the mid-'70s, Horslips seemed poised to become Ireland's answer to Steeleye Span. But they also had a shot at being the next Jethro Tull (only a better hard rock outfit), or maybe Genesis, or even Yes in their folkier moments. Those events never quite happened, but Horslips released half-a-dozen superb albums along the way, becoming Ireland's most acclaimed folk-rock and progressive band. Collection includes: Happy to Meet, Sorry to Part (1972); The Táin (1973); Drive The Cold Winter Away (1975); The Book of Invasions: A Celtic Symphony (1976).

Sawdust includes "All The Pretty Faces" (which was the b-side of "When You Were Young"); two movie soundtrack tunes, "Shadowplay" (a Joy Division cover from Control, Anton Corbijn's biopic of Ian Curtis) and "Move Away" (from Spiderman 3); as well as a cover of Kenny Rogers & The First Edition's "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town" (written by Mel Tillis). The collection will also contain songs which weren't completed for Hot Fuss and Sam's Town. The Killers recently went back into the studio to finish the tracks, including "Tranquilize" featuring Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Lou Reed.

Mac Rebennack (aka Dr. John) in many ways embodies not only New Orleans music, but American music as well. His distinct sound is rooted in Crescent City jazz and R&B, yet also contains elements of country, blues, and rock & roll. And it's all tied together by an individualist attitude and a voodoo-mystic aesthetic utterly unique to the doctor. Trader John's Crawfish Soiree is a double-disc set of early odds and sods that presents John in a rollicking, nascent incarnation. Far from the more traditionalist approach he's embodied since the 1990s, here John is riffing on vintage R&B, and sprinkling it with just enough gris-gris to give it his signature bayou weirdness. Nearly all of the songs are Rebennack originals, but John has such strong ties to the roots of his music that it often sounds like these songs have sprung up from the dirt. While the liner notes offer little in the way of session information, they do provide a succinct overview of Rebennack's long career, making this a nice entry point for neophytes, in addition to being a delight for fans.

Technically, the 24 tracks that show up on Universal's 2013 double-disc collection Rarities are indeed rarities, as they never showed up on any Rod Stewart LP, but that doesn't mean they're all that hard to find…

The title of Rarities 1971-2003 is a little misleading, as is the cover photo of the Stones in prime late-'70s form: both suggest that this long-awaited trawl through the Rolling Stones vaults, released in conjunction with Starbucks' Hear Music label but available in all conventional retail outlets, will be heavy on '70s material. That's certainly not the case. There are just three '70s cuts here, actually – four if you count the live "Mannish Boy," which appeared on the 1977 double live album Love You Live and the 1981 odds-n-sods collection Sucking in the Seventies, which was reissued earlier in 2005, the same year Rarities 1971-2003 came out…

It marks the Ratt studio debut for guitarist Carlos Cavazo, formerly of Quiet Riot. It was released by Roadrunner Records, a sub-label of their longtime home Atlantic Records.
