Could there be any more confrontational sound in Miles Davis' vast catalog than the distorted guitars and tinny double-timing drums reacting to a two-note bass riff funking it up on the first track from On the Corner? Before the trumpet even enters the picture, the story has been broken off somewhere in the middle, with deep street music melding with a secret language held within the band and those who can actually hear this music – certainly not the majority of Miles' fan base built up over the past 25 years. They heard this as a huge "f*ck you." Miles just shrugged and told them it wasn't personal, but they could take it that way if they wanted to, and he blew on his trumpet.

Dynamite bass work (as always), contemporary (but not "smooth", though not quite straight ahead either), stacked with excellent players: Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Al Foster, Dave Weckl, Alex Acuna, Vinnie Colaiuta, Eric Marienthal, etc., each selected to contribute to the style and sound of particular songs. A good effort…

With his previous releases, pianist Peter Zak has focused on standards and works by a variety of jazz greats. This time around he focuses on McCoy Tyner, a veteran who has written a formidable array of compositions during his long career, though he has rarely, if ever, been the focus of a recorded tribute. Zak makes up for that oversight with this rewarding session, joined by his working trio consisting of longtime bassist Paul Gill and drummer Quincy Davis (the latter also appeared on Seed of Sin). Zak puts his own stamp on each piece, not merely trying to copy Tyner's style (which would be pointless), opening with a snappy take of "Blues on the Corner" that also features his sidemen.

Shakatak hasn't changed their signature style in over 50 albums and that's the reason why their fans stay faithful to this group. On The Corner showcases the core of their charming music. A vocal carrier of the captivating melody flavored with Bill's piano runs.
