As in other later works by Lehár, Giuditta eliminates the happy ending otherwise typical of the entertaining genre of the operetta: here Lehár and his librettists endeavoured to weave elements of the grand opera into the operetta. In 1910 the composer himself had predicted 'that between the opera and the operetta, as far as artistic quality is concerned, there will soon be no more dividing wall.' In Giuditta, in keeping with the occasion, the Lehár melody wears orchestral attire that is splendid and almost pompous.

After the patriotic victory oratorios , the oratorio 'Susanna' marks a turning point in Handel s composition. This Old Testament narrative is a popular motif in the domain of art history. Many a portrayal exists of the steadfast Susanna being watched unbeknownst to her by two lusting elders as she bathes. Likewise, the scene of the supposed adulteress appearing before the judges who sentence her to death inspired painters such as Rembrandt, Giorgione, Gentileschi and Corinth. In adopting this as his subject, Handel chose a heroine who is neither a queen nor a prophet.

For Glossa s new 'Passio' release Antonio Florio has discovered and prepared a performing edition of the 1685 St John Passion setting by the Neapolitan composer Gaetano Veneziano: a contemporary of Scarlatti, favoured pupil of Francesco Provenzale and maestro in the royal chapel. It features countertenor Raffaele Pe in the technically demanding role of the Evangelist. Until recently, Italian Passiontide settings from the Baroque era have amounted to only that by Alessandro Scarlatti, but this score by Veneziano has been found in the Archivio dell Oratorio dei Girolamini in Naples.

This month's new release from SOMM brings exciting news for all lovers of English Song! At long last, Hubert Parry's complete Twelve Sets of English Lyrics are now available, beginning with Volume I. The twelve sets, which also include other songs by Parry, are spread over three volumes which will be released at six-monthly intervals. This has been a close and enjoyable collaboration between SOMM, the excellent pianist Andrew West and Susan Gritton, James Gilchrist and Roderick Williams, three charismatic singers at the top of their profession, all sharing the same fondness for the expressive lyricism and eloquence inherent in Parry's songs.

In commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the death of Miguel de Cervantes, La Ritirata and Josetxu Obregon have created a program for Glossa sallying forth on the back of music composed by Antonio Caldara and inspired by El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de la Manch. Antonio Caldara was neither the first nor the last composer to have his compositional ingenuity sparked off by Cervantes' timeless masterpiece.
