Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (OMD) continue their 40th anniversary celebrations with the announcement of a career box set, Souvenir and brand new greatest hits collection of the same name, due out on 4 October.

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark are one of the earliest, most commercially successful, and enduring synth pop groups. Inspired most by the advancements of Kraftwerk and striving at one point "to be ABBA and Stockhausen," they've continually drawn from early electronic music as they've alternately disregarded, mutated, or embraced the conventions of the three-minute pop song. Outside their native England, OMD are known primarily for "Maid of Orleans" and the Pretty in Pink soundtrack smash "If You Leave," yet they scored 18 additional charting U.K. singles in the '80s alone. These hits supported inventive albums such as Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (1980), Architecture & Morality (1981), and commercial suicide-turned-cult classic Dazzle Ships (1983)…

To mark the records’s 40th anniversary, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark will release the three singles from 1981’s Architecture & Morality together on one album, along with associated tracks: unreleased demos, studio sessions and live performances.

New Wave / New Romantic / Synth Pop

After a delay in 2006, New Romantics old and, well…new can enjoy the highly anticipated release of OMD's Architecture and Morality, remastered and enhanced with DVD footage. This third album from the bruised nucleus of bassist/singer Andy McCluskey and keyboardist/electronics enthusiast Paul Humphreys is often regarded as their seminal work, not least because it achieved critical and commercial success (over three million sales and several top ten hits) unlike its predecessor Organisation (for all its sonic ambition, overly challenging) and its follow up Dazzle Ships (which lacked memorable songs).

This singles collection can be regarded as OMD's greatest hits. It may not have some of the hits that are on other collections but this one is in my humble opinion one of THE best compilations of any artists. The only drawback to this compilation is that they are the radio or single version. Often album versions are longer and one may miss some of the characteristics of the original album version. But each of the singles are quite complete in themselves.

The 20 track CD features all the hits and fan favorites including 'Electricity', 'Enola Gay', 'Joan Of Arc', 'Tesla Girls', 'Sailing On The Seven Seas' and more. The accompanying DVD boasts 31 promo videos, of which 28 have never been available before on DVD and 11 are released for the first time. An excellent package for the hardcore fan and the OMD novice. When Paul Humphreys and Andy McCluskey reunited as Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark to appear on German TV in June 2005, they hadn't performed together for 16 years. Yet it went so well that they soon made plans for a full return to the live arena involving their former bandmates Martin Cooper and Malcolm Holmes, the other two members of the line-up that made the epochal Architecture & Morality album in 1981. Indeed, in May 2007, they embarked on a European tour which included two dates at London's Hammersmith Apollo and saw them perform Architecture & Morality in toto complete with its trio of Top 5 hits Souvenir, Joan Of Arc and Maid Of Orleans followed by a dozen of their synth-pop hits, from Electricity, their wonderful 1979 debut for Factory Records, to the rousing Walking On The Milky Way from 1996, via the yearning If You Leave, their 1986 US breakthrough from the soundtrack to Pretty In Pink.
