Produced by Laurent Cugny and Daniel Richard for Orchestre National De Jazz. Laurent Cugny - Bandleader. Ranks alongside George Gruntz as prime European contemporary composer, leader. His large orchestra is remniscent of Gil Evans big band in final stages; his pieces have quirky, unpredictable quality, as do his recordings.
The album was recorded in studio and live in 1994 and 1995.

To inaugurate his urban investigations Olivier Benoit naturally chose Paris, a city he knows intimately for having lived and worked there for twenty years; the musicians in his orchestra have an intimate knowledge of Paris as well, most of them being Parisians by adoption. In this sense, EUROPA Paris intends to be a “manifesto” for the French capital’s artistic effervescence, as Paris continues to attract artists of all horizons (both geographical and aesthetic) who dissolve into a crucible whose diversity and inventiveness are extraordinary. Creating EUROPA PARIS unquestionably put the seal on the new group, bonding its members together in a symbol of the capital’s vitality!

Whether appearing solo as a guitarist or leading orchestras whose personnel and size couldn’t vary more — they range from the quartet to the big-band —, Olivier Benoit’s sole obsession has always been to further his explorations of territories still barely represented on the official map of contemporary music.

Christine Jensen leads the Orchestre national de jazz de Montréal in two large-scale works. First off comes a composition by Jensen herself – a five-movement work that pays tribute to great jazz artists who helped fashion her own style as both composer and improviser: John Coltrane, Lee Konitz, Wayne Shorter, Kenny Wheeler, and Jan Jarczyk (her first teacher). Then we hear a suite from Gershwin’s immortal opera Porgy and Bess in an arrangement by Gil Evans. This is the suite recorded by Miles Davis and his band, conducted by Evans, and released to great acclaim in 1959. It was one of the finest collaborations between Evans and Davis, and has gone down in jazz history as a monument of orchestral jazz. All the opera’s best-known numbers are here, including Bess, you is my woman now, It ain’t necessarily so, There’s a boat that’s leaving soon for New York, and of course Summertime.

Olivier Benoit brings his EUROPA project to a close by setting a northerly course with his musicians that takes them to the capital of Norway. Oslo is an atypical city. Nestling in the heart of triumphant natural surroundings, it has constantly pursued its architectural and cultural transformation, somewhere in between ancient tradition and the incredibly modern. At the close of the last century, this city was already setting the tone for new artistic concepts. To accompany the capital of Norway in music and establish a subjective portrait of the city, first an immersion was necessary. Living to the rhythm of Oslo’s seasons constituted a vital source of inspiration that provided the composition with its starting point.

I'm very fond of Miles' '70s "electric" period, especially the dark, deep live albums he recorded during this time (namely Dark Magus and Agharta). This disc, which gives MD the big-band treatment, offers many pleasures of its own, although, for my money, neither Cugny nor anyone else (save maybe Bill Laswell) has ever reached the same primal place that Miles did during this time. Excellent album! This album is something special. Great atmosphere, 60 minutes of pure enjoying.

The third album of the ONJ offers an exciting foray into contemporary music. Through two original pieces written specially for the Orchestra, Benjamin de la Fuente and Andrea Agostini deliver a highly personal vision of Rome that borrows from souvenirs and reawakened emotions, and from their own intimate rapport with the city. Two contrasted works that oscillate between high-voltage outbursts, irresistible orchestral masses, and more melancholy, intimate passages, improvisations and rock explosions included… EUROPA ROME, a new album guaranteed to muddy the trail of music genres!

Didier Squiban has been a loyal companion of the Orchester National de Bretagne for over twenty years. After the recording of his first two symphonies, the Symphonie Bretagne and the Symphonie Iroise, we were able to complete the symphonic trilogy imagined by Didier Squiban by recording in 2021, the Symphonie du Ponant, in the company of great performers such as Baptiste Trotignon on the piano and Airelle Besson on trumpet.
