Embracing his third album with Internet Arms, Diane Coffee presents fans with a rather perplexing directional shift. Helmed by the fabulous Shaun Fleming, a noted voice actor and friend of Foxygen, the genderless project first struck gold with My Friend Fish in 2013, a smoothly soulful California sunshine pop slacker throwback journey of an album that succeeded despite (or, one may argue, because of) recording limitations.

We have put together and made available a free CD, as part of our celebrations in launching the new Document Records Store website, making available CDs and for the first time, downloads, from the mighty Document Records catalogue. It must be said that one of the most crucial elements in Document’s survival has been the internet. Some may call it a necessary evil; a double-edged sword. Whatever one’s view might be, it has, over the years, brought Document to a very large and ever growing fan base and followers of the music held, dearly, in the Document Catalogue. This is a process that continues, unabated. And with the internet has come the amazing ability to communicate to fans of this music around the world, informing them of what is in the catalogue, what is new and of offers, discounts and the like. Yet, it is more than that, with the use of social media, we can communicate something of the personality, character and thinking of those that are behind the scenes at Document in a way that no one could have dreamed of when the label was first created, back in 1985. Which raises a question that will be asked more and more by generations to come; how did people communicate before the advent of the internet?

Following two albums of glittery, strutting psych-pop as alter ego Diane Coffee, Foxygen drummer Shaun Fleming dims the spotlights and turns up the fluorescents for the technology-inspired Internet Arms. Still playful and off-center but with a more thoughtful, anxious tone, it embraces synthesizers and electronic drums to reflect themes of alienation in a digital world. (It's his first album to be recorded digitally instead of to tape.) Inspired by the idea of social-media versions of self, the glistening, midtempo "Simulation" contrasts the problem-free life of a facsimile with "a state of vegetation in my personal isolation." Other lyrics carefully consider a made-to-order lover. Processed vocals in various states of mechanical distortion give the impressions that the narrator, too, is at one with the machines.

Having sprung from L.A.’s Odd Future collective, Matt Martians and Syd innately understand the dynamics of collaboration and ego management. So when The Internet’s third album, Ego Death, was nominated for a Grammy in 2016, all five members dove into solo projects rather than crank out a follow-up. “I had a lot of music I needed to get out of my system that wouldn’t have made sense coming out under The Internet,” Syd told Beats 1 host Zane Lowe in May 2018. “It just made us all feel a lot more free and open to each other’s ideas.” The result is a more sonically inventive and personally assured record, and the cohesiveness is evident in everything from the lyrics to the title. “Going out on our own got us battle wounds that we can all relate to,” said Syd. “We all move in a unit now.”

Veteran blues pianist (and longtime Howlin' Wolf sideman) Emery Williams Jr. - known professionally as Detroit Junior - has had a renaissance of sorts in the past decade, releasing three albums on Blue Suit Records, and now this one, Blues on the Internet, on Delmark Records. Williams is a throwback to the classic Chicago blues piano style, and his warm, expressive vocals fall somewhere between a hoarse Ray Charles and a latter-day Bob Dylan, while his songwriting, although hardly innovative, is solid and workmanlike, avoiding most of the obvious blues clichés. His intent isn't to move blues into the 21st century so much as preserve the way it was played in Chicago in the 1950s (where Williams played alongside the likes of Jimmy Reed, Eddie Boyd, Eddie Taylor, and Little Mack Simmons), and he succeeds wonderfully on original tracks here…
