A welcome addition to the Royal Academy of Music Bicentenary Series, violinist Charlotte Spruit’s debut album Le Mercure Galant recreates the intimate atmosphere of a seventeenth-century Parisian salon, where the city’s elite gathered to enjoy the latest musical treasures. Some of that musical elite is represented here: the prodigious Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, who was one of Louis XIV’s favourite composers, the King’s cherished lute player Robert de Visée, the illustrious violinist and composer Johann Paul von Westhoff, plus Marc-Antoine Charpentier and Michel Lambert. These distinguished composers all featured one way or another in Le Mercure galant, a prominent magazine reporting the vibrant cultural life of the French court. Charlotte is joined by Sergio Bucheli (lute) and Jonathan Manson (viola da gamba).

For her first album on Linn, Jasmin Iris Ghera embarks on a captivating journey through timeless masterpieces reimagined for trumpet and piano. From Mendelssohn’s powerful Cello Sonata No. 2 to Mozart’s vibrant Bassoon Concerto in B flat major, by way of Bach’s Siciliano from his Flute Sonata BWV 1031, the programme sheds new light on these works and transports the listener to a world of musical emotions and discoveries. This bold album, with pianist Junyan Chen, is part of the Royal Academy of Music Bicentenary Series.

As part of the Royal Academy of Music Bicentenary Series, Hadewych van Gent explores innovative voices of the cello repertoire in a bold first album on Linn. The warm, intimate opening piece is Hadewych’s own take on Colla parte by Dutch cellist and composer Ernst Reijseger who continues to inspire Hadewych to this day. Pianist Yupeng He joins Hadewych for Rebecca Clarke’s passionate Sonata, which was originally composed for the viola; Hadewych is one of the first cellists to record the work. The album ends with Pianissimo, the second movement of Grāmata čellam by Pēteris Vasks which combines, as in Colla parte, singing with cello playing, thus creating an authentic form of expression and adding Hadewych’s own voice to the composer’s.
