Perhaps best likened to a marching band on an acid trip, Neutral Milk Hotel's second album is another quixotic sonic parade; lo-fi yet lush, impenetrable yet wholly accessible, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is either the work of a genius or an utter crackpot, with the truth probably falling somewhere in between. Again teaming with producer Robert Schneider, Jeff Mangum invests the material here with new maturity and clarity; while the songs run continuously together, as they did on the previous On Avery Island, there is a much clearer sense of shifting dynamics from track to track, with a greater emphasis on structure and texture.
Over the Edge is the second studio album by the heavy metal band Hurricane. It was released in 1988 on Enigma Records. The album peaked at number 92 on the Billboard The Billboard 200 chart. Over the Edge is a superb ten-song collection of album rock from the latter end of the 1980s, melodic metal with hooks and clever twists that bring it a cut above the expected fare that the plethora of hair bands gave the audience in that era.
Harold Mabern is one of a number of American jazz artists who have developed a strong following in Japan, resulting in regular opportunities to record for the Japanese Venus label. This trio date with bassist Dwayne Burno and drummer Willie Jones III (the latter sticking mainly to brushes) covers ten songs from the vast Harold Arlen songbook, though not all of them are well-known standards. Mabern's bouncing, breezy opener is a fun-filled take of "Over the Rainbow," followed by a gospel-inflected soul-jazz treatment of "A Sleepin' Bee" that prominently features Burno. His blues-drenched take of "Blues in the Night" is harmonically rich, while Mabern's jovial treatment of "I've Got the World on a String" swings like mad…
Taken from Chet Is Back!, recorded in Italy in 1962, Somewhere Over the Rainbow features Baker at his finest, and is an excellent introduction to the musician's non-vocal work. As is the case with most Baker albums, Somewhere Over the Rainbow feels like a quickly put-together session recording. The material is all standard jazz repertoire, played in a no-frills format, without specific arrangements or endings. It is the musicianship here that is the main attraction. Baker has rarely sounded better; his technique is in top shape, and his solos are textbook examples of lyrical bop playing. Baker, as was not always the case throughout his career, surrounds himself on Somewhere Over the Rainbow with strong and supportive sidemen…
