Twenty years after Birds, Orphans & Madmen, Jakubisko essentially reworked the same material into a wonderful narrative about ordinary people surviving within the sea of Eastern European history. But here the gratuitous ugliness of the earlier film is replaced by a fable-like wonder and deep affection for the characters. Two men fight to make a life for themselves – and eventually for the damaged woman they come to love – as the devastation of WWII is replaced by the oppression of communism. The mix of humour, romance and tragedy is reminiscent of Kusturica.

The story is about Jai Singh Rathore and Aditi Wadia, two friends who are so close that the Wadias decide to get them married. But both disagree, and decide to seek soul mates for each other. With Aditi's help, Jai meets Meghna, and both fall in love with each other. Jai is introduced to her parents, who also approve of him. Aditi's is then introduced to Sushant Modi, who instantly finds approval, even with her reclusive brother, Amit. Mala anxiously awaits the climax as the story unfolds with many twists and turns.

It is a story about a modern mother, a widow who is trying to keep her son and daughter at home and thus delay their coming of age and becoming independent. The film starts when her daughter introduces her boyfriend. Mother tries to disqualify the guest by various tricks and get him out of the house as unwanted. Unfortunately, this time she has faced an equal rival. The visit gets off as an accidental get together. When it turns out daughter has already married him, all hell breaks loose.
