Panchos

The quintessential classic bolero trio, Los Panchos were formed in New York in 1944 by Mexicans Alfredo Bojalil Gil and Chucho Navarro and Puerto Rican Hernando Avilés. The trio's innovative format, which would become a standard of the genre, featured three voices and three guitars, as well as Gil's distinctive use of the Mexican requinto guitar, an instrument he created himself, for all the lead parts. Los Panchos became one of the most famous Latin American musical acts of the 20th century, making their name synonymous with the bolero and exporting the genre all over the world, selling million of records, and appearing in countless films.

Gigliola Cinquetti, the Italian winner of the 1964 Eurovision Song Contest, was born on December 20, 1947, in Verona. She first received attention at age 16, when she triumphed at the annual San Remo Song Contest in early 1964; just weeks later, she swept to victory at Eurovision, to set herself up for a stunningly successful career. Her winning entry at both events, incidentally, was "Non Ho L'Eta" (Not Old Enough). The song was a major hit throughout Europe, including the traditionally resistant U.K.

Opera isn't normally thought of as a path to success in the world of jazz and blues, but it's the route (with some detours) that Marina Crouse took to become one of the most notable rising talents on the San Francisco/Bay Area music scene. Her early classical training is reflected in her powerful vocal style, and that excitement drives Crouse's debut album Never Too Soon, which balances blues tradition with contemporary urban funk. Karen Souza (born January 10, 1984) is an Argentinian jazz and bossa nova singer, songwriter, and producer. Souza began her career by providing vocals for producers of electronic music. Under pseudonyms she sang versions of hits songs from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, such as "Creep" by Radiohead and "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" by Culture Club. Her version of "Creep" was used in the film The Zero Theorem (2013). In 2010, she performed at Blue Note Tokyo and signed a contract with JVC Victor in Japan. She has toured in Venezuela, Brazil, Mexico, China, Korea, Spain, and Italy.

Hailing from the American Southwest, the Borderlands Ensemble was formed in 2017 to reach across social boundaries and bring communities together through concert music. the space in which to see, their debut release, was catalyzed by a project entitled “Place and Identity in the Borderlands” which specifically explored connections between the shared cultural identity of Arizona and Mexico.

María Martha Serra Lima (born December 19, 1944) is an Argentine singer. Born in Buenos Aires to a family of auto dealership proprietors, Serra Lima was first signed on to a record label in 1977, and became famous across Latin America and in Spain during the 1970s and 1980s. Known for her contralto vocal texture and her repertoire of love ballads and boleros, she collaborated extensively with singer-songwriters from elsewhere in Latin America, particularly Mexican standards such as Los Panchos and Armando Manzanero; among her best-known, non-Hispanic interpretations is that of Paul Anka's My Way. Her albums became hits in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, and elsewhere in the region, apart from her home country. She has shared the stage with numerous major international singers, done multiple international tours and won many awards through her career as a singer. Sold 10 million albums in the late 70's and early 80's.
