Rhino Handmade unveils the first comprehensive collection of Percy Sledge's recordings for Atlantic. This four-disc set spans 1966-74 with 104 songs, including both studio and live recordings as well as several rare and unreleased tracks. The music, arranged mostly in chronological order, offers a richly detailed portrait of the King of Country Soul’s career following the massive success of “When A Man Loves A Woman.” In fact, the song is featured twice, opening the collection with the well-known studio version and closing it with an alternate take recorded during the same session.

Digitally remastered two CD set from the soul legend. This set features Percy Sledge's final Atlantic album My Special Prayer, plus 27 bonus tracks. Issued in 1970, My Special Prayer rounded up Sledge's singles from 1969, including covers of Buffalo Springfield's "Kind Woman", Burt Bacharach's "Any Day Now", and Elvis Presley's "True Love Travels On A Gravel Road". The bonus tracks are all Percy's single sides from 1968 to 1973 that weren't issued on albums, as well as five recordings from this period that remained unreleased until a limited edition box set in 2010. The booklet includes lengthy annotation by acknowledged expert Tony Rounce.

Before he was the “King of Country Soul,” Sledge was an Alabama-born former hospital worker, playing with a soul combo on weekends. In 1966 he signed to Atlantic, and, following a break-up with a longtime girlfriend, recorded a simple, heartfelt single, “When a Man Loves a Woman.” The impassioned, off-the-cuff delivery (an entirely honest one – Sledge improvised the lyrics on the spot) helped propel the song to No. 1 around the world. Sledge enjoyed other Top 40 hits for the rest of his Atlantic tenure, but it’s “When a Man Loves a Woman” that he’ll forever be associated with.

It also reached # 4 in the UK, and # 2 in 1987 when it was used in a Levis ad. Warm And Tender Soul (also 1966) contains his three more R&B hits: "Warm And Tender Love" (R&B # 5 and Pop # 17), "It Tears Me Up" (R&B # 7) and his version of "Love Me Tender". This is absolute manna from Southern soul heaven. On the strength of the one, long-unavailable 1973 LP that forms the core of this compilation, Tommie Young can stake a claim as perhaps the finest neo-Aretha Franklin stylist among the slew of early-’70s soul sisters. But she was a meteor flare, almost immediately retreating back to the gospel scene that nurtured her, save for singing lead on the soundtrack to A Woman Called Moses, Cicely Tyson’s 1978 film about Harriet Tubman. Granted, Young didn’t have the protean power of Franklin (like anyone did?), so her vocal tone is lighter; but the sensational, effortless, melodic leaps on the commanding title track does nothing to dispel the Franklin impression.
