The makers of the Walt Disney/PIXAR CGI-animated movie WALL·E, which concerns the adventures of a cute robot in a post-apocalyptic future, must have had quite a budget. Thomas Newman has composed what sounds like five different movie scores for it, and he has gotten a giant studio orchestra (there are 52 violinists, just to begin with) as well as plenty of other instrumentalists, to play it. There are grand orchestral themes full of lush string playing, stirring action music, cues that sound like they combine sound effects with the music, contemporary pop tunes, and even a complement of those quirky little motifs, usually played on odd instruments, that are Newman's signature as a composer. (Think of the theme he wrote for the TV series Six Feet Under.) As if that's not enough, there are plot-derived excerpts from the soundtrack to Hello, Dolly!, Louis Armstrong playing and singing "La Vie en Rose," and, last but not least, a story-concluding song by Peter Gabriel that earned him (and Newman) an Academy Award nomination for Best Song. Clearly the music plays a big part in WALL·E, and Newman has done his part to make it another hit from the already wildly successful PIXAR animation studio.

The city of Belém, in the Northern state of Pará in Brazil, has long been a hotbed of culture and musical innovation. Enveloped by the mystical wonder of the Amazonian forest and overlooking the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean, Belém consists of a diverse culture as vibrant and broad as the Amazon itself. Amerindians, Europeans, Africans - and the myriad combinations between these people - would mingle, and ingeniously pioneer musical genres such as Carimbó, Samba-De-Cacete, Siriá, Bois-Bumbás and bambiá. Although left in the margins of history, these exotic and mysteriously different sounds would thrive in a parallel universe of their own.

Ten years have passed since the phenomenal success of the „Paz e Futebol“ (SK089CD / LP) compilation, released on Sonar Kollektiv. Since then Germany went on to win the Football World Cup in Brazil sparking an increased self-confidence and maybe inspiring the Berlin musical institution Jazzanova to compile again a courageously eclectic showcase of Brazilian music in all its facets and peculiarities.

In this CD were gathered a selection of sambas in the voices of great samba as Jair Rodrigues, Leci Brandao, Luiz Ayrão and others.

Berlin's Jazzanova collective formed in 1995, after DJing with one another at a club called Delicious Doughnuts. Alexander Barck, Claas Brieler, Roskow Kretschmann, Stefan Leisering, Axel Reinemer, and Jürgen von Knoblauch shared a common goal of blending their collected inspirations together to create a new, sophisticated sound, with debts owed to nearly every form of dance-oriented music from the past several decades.
