Peter Allen became interested in the trend toward introspective singer-songwriters in the early 1970s, and in writing more commercial music. Employed as a staff writer at Metromedia Records, he co-wrote “Jennifer” with Carole Bayer Sager. The song was sung in the TV movie Getting Together by Bobby Sherman, who recorded it for Metromedia, and it became a Top 40 hit in the fall of 1971. Metromedia Records then commissioned Allen to record his own album, and he released "Peter Allen" in 1971.

In the 1970s, Peter Allen gained recognition both as a composer of romantic ballads such as "I Honestly Love You" and "Don't Cry Out Loud," and, contrastingly, as a flamboyant stage performer. He learned to play the piano and began entertaining people at the pub in his small Australian hometown when he was still a child. By 1959, he was in Sydney, where he became a last-minute replacement in a duo appearing on the television show Australian Bandstand with guitarist and singer Chris Bell.

"Bi-Coastal" is the 6th studio album released in 1980 by Australian singer and songwriter Peter Allen. The album is Allen's most successful and was produced by David Foster who also wrote many of its songs. The hit "Fly Away", originally by Japanese artist Mariya Takeuchi, was co-written by Foster and Carole Bayer Sager. The title tune co-written by Foster and Tom Keane features double entendres comparing living on both coasts of the United States to Allen's own bisexuality. "Fly Away" peaked at #55 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and was his only North American hit as a singer. (A cover version of "Fly Away" by Stevie Woods peaked at #84 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1982.) The album has become a classic with lovers of west coast pop music not because of the songs but for the use of musicians like Toto, Steve Lukather, Jay Graydon and others. The album peaked at #123 on the Billboard 200. The title track "Bi-Coastal" peaked at #79 on the Billboard Dance Music/Club Play Singles chart.
