Peter Bernstein Jazz guitarist Peter Bernstein was born September 3, 1967, in New York City. He got his first break while attending the New School when he met Jim Hall, who recruited him for a concert of guitarists as part of the 1990 JVC Jazz Festival in New York. The show was recorded by MusicMasters and issued as Live at Town Hall, Vol. 2. Bernstein quickly began playing with other jazz musicians, notably appearing on albums by Lou Donaldson, Michael Hashim, Larry Goldings, Mel Rhyne, Jesse Davis, and Geoff Keezer. Two CD collection containing both of his cult classic electronic albums 'Emotional Disguise' (1982) and 'Correspondence' (1983). Plus all the spin-off singles and remixes from his time at Polydor, between 1981 and 1983, when he was one of the stylish lynchpins of the burgeoning New Wave / New Romantic scene! Mostly produced by Georg Kajanus from the bands Sailor and DATA, Peter's repertoire is synth- pop opulence, grandiose in scale and intent. Swoon in the melodic vastness, the majestic sweeps of lush, layered analogue synths. It is unmistakably ear-worm electronic pop, but with cinematic intimations of gloriously exotic other worlds. It presents, at times, as if an electronic travelogue of emotion fronted by the rich baritone of a suave matinée idol troubadour whose influences were unashamedly Moroder, Bowie and Ferry. It is arguably his highly sought after sensuous debut single, the Midge Ure produced 'Torch Songs For The Heroine', which has endured; the hidden gem of the 'Ballad Version' of which bristles with a redolence of Ultravox's 'Vienna' and it's landmark atmospheric, filmic, synth-pop sparseness. The release comes with a 28-page booklet containing both an introduction and comprehensive track-by-track listening notes written by Peter Godwin along with full lyrics and evocative period photographs.

Ignaz (or Ignacy) Friedman was one of the most important pianists from the early decades of the twentieth century, ranking in stature with such keyboard stalwarts as Josef Hofmann, Sergey Rachmaninov, Josef Lhevinne, and Leopold Godowsky. His contemporaries were among his greatest admirers: Horowitz, a friend but generally taciturn in offering praise to rivals, was said to have assessed Friedman's technique as stronger than his own. Friedman was also a composer with a fairly substantial output, mainly of piano works or of chamber music involving the piano. He also transcribed many compositions for his instrument and edited Chopin's complete piano works, as well as selected ones by Beethoven, Liszt, and others.

The most popular folk group of the 1960s, Peter, Paul and Mary in later decades have also proved themselves to be among the most durable music acts in history. Their longevity dwarfs that of the Weavers, while the fact that the trio continues to be associated with a major record label (Warner Bros.) after decades in the business sets them apart from rivals like the Kingston Trio and the Brothers Four. Then again, perhaps it isn't so surprising – Peter, Paul and Mary's roots run deeper than almost any other folk act one might care to name, while their appeal crosses audience lines that other acts couldn't (and can't) even approach.

For Peter Mulvey’s 17th album, and Righteous Babe Records debut, Are You Listening?, he traveled to New Orleans to record with producer and friend Ani DiFranco and her band. Are You Listening? marks the 25th anniversary of a rich career of approximately 4,000 concerts and over a million miles traveled. Mulvey has shared stages with Emmylou Harris, Richard Thompson, DiFranco, Greg Brown, the Indigo Girls, and many others. NPR’s Robert Siegel wasn’t kidding when he said, “Peter Mulvey is a 21st century troubadour.” Lyrically, the songs from Are You Listening? range from the emotive, stream-of-consciousness flood of “The Other Morning Over Coffee” to the spare, haunting title track, which uses only seventeen words.

Lieder ohne Worte – Songs without Words – seems to be a description invented by Mendelssohn himself for these short, lyrical and descriptive piano pieces which he composed so prolifically. Indeed, it is arguable that these works define his pianistic output in the same way that the Mazurka defines Chopin’s. Publishing them in sets of six, Mendelssohn composed Lieder ohne Worte throughout his career – they proved a type of composition to which he had a lifetime attraction. For the first volume, rather than approaching them chronologically or as complete sets, Peter Donohoe selected pieces to build a satisfying programme.
