Les GI’s punaisaient (en anglais “To pin-up”) les dessins ou photos de leurs starlettes au mur de leurs casernes. Une traduction littérale de “Pin-Up” en français serait donc : “Punaise enfoncée”, ce qui n’a rien à voir et nous éloigne du sujet (quoique ?)… Pin-Up donc, continuerons-nous de les appeler, ces créatures de rêves qui permettaient aux soldats d’échapper par instants à leur triste condition. Les aviateurs aussi les adoptèrent. Leurs formes pulpeuses et généreuses ornaient les carlingues des avions de combat et les flancs rebondis des bombardiers. Les jeunes pilotes leur trouvaient des vertus porte bonheur. Ils baptisaient souvent leur avion du petit nom de la starlette qui y figurait. Leur succès était tel que le dessinateur Milton Caniff (authentique dessinateur, créateur, en 1942, d’une série commandée par l’armée, appelée Male Call, et dont s’inspirèrent Yann et Berthet pour créer Pin-Up) n’hésitait pas à emmener avec lui ses modèles en chair et en os lors de ses tournées dans les bases américaines…

Alberto Vargas took over Esquire magazine’s monthly pin-up post in late 1940. By 1942, when the U.S. joined the war, he had more than a million ardent enlisted fans who carried his pin-ups in backpacks and duffel bags as reminders of the American girls they’d left behind. When Esquire was charged with obscenity over a particularly spicy pin-up in 1943 the military stepped in to fight for the Varga Girl, declaring her necessary to maintain the morale of young fighting men. Today these wartime pin-ups are the most collectible of Vargas’s work. Find them all in this pocket-sized delight.
