The fourth, fifth, and sixth box sets dedicated to compiling all of Depeche Mode's single releases were put out in 2004, 13 years after the first three originally appeared. All of these sets provide a convenience for hardcore fans since they provide each single in its own slim jewel case. Needless to say, those who bought the original singles as they were released will be flustered once again. The sixth set, covering 1997 through 2001, includes the "Barrell of Gun," "It's No Good," "Home," "Useless," "Only When I Lose Myself," and "Dream On" singles. Remixes come from Dan the Automator, DJ Shadow, GusGus, Plastikman, Dave Clarke, Kid 606, Bushwacka!, and Kruder & Dorfmeister.

Recording as Hardfloor, Oliver Bondzio and Ramon Zenker are responsible for some of the most hair-raising acid cuts to come out of Germany during the heyday of rave culture. As Dadamnphreaknoizphunk, the pair explore the chill side of electronic music, resulting in a jazzy trip-hop sound that seems to be the complete antithesis of their mind-bending dance attacks. The common thread between this seemingly irreconcilable duality is that most classic of electronic music machines, the Roland TB-303. And while the tiny silver box has done for dance music what the distortion pedal did for rock & roll, Bondzio and Zenker bring the machine's alien squelching sound home with them, melding it with more typical jazz and hip-hop samples to create downtempo tracks with a fluid groove that spaces out the otherwise blunted rhythms. "Custommade Sneakers" joins a repetitive acid blurb with subdued organ flourishes while "Complex Dinner Wardrobe" uses the 303 itself to achieve its melodic ends with overlaid acid lines that sound like Plastikman if he were to employ a funk drummer.

The most basic compilation for American audiences interested in Pete Namlook's Fax Records is a two-disc set including tracks from Namlook guises Air, the Putney, 4Voice and Shades of Orion. A host of other Fax favorites make appearances: Plastikman's Richie Hawtin on the epic From Within track "Sad Alliance," Deep Space Network and Dr. Atmo on I.F.'s "Kisy Loa," Atom Heart and Tetsu Inoue on their Datacide track "Data Haku." Fax is easily the most traditional-sounding ambient label, and the music would make an equally strong impression on fans of Hearts of Space and Basic Channel.
