The guitar is a wonderfully versatile instrument. It is portable, needs no accompanist because it provides harmony as well as melody, and has an intrinsically beautiful tone which is sensitive to human touch. The higher levels of solo playing take time and practice, as with any instrument, but the guitar can be a pleasure from the first day and the first successful sounding of a chord…

Dogma 95, the avant-garde filmmaking movement founded by the Danish director Lars von Trier and three of his fellow directors, was launched in 1995 at an elite cinema conference in Paris—when von Trier was called upon to speak about the future of film but instead showered the audience with pamphlets announcing the new movement and its manifesto. A refreshingly original critical commentary on the director and his practice, Playing the Waves is a paramount addition to one of new media’s most provocative genres: games and gaming.

Mads Tolling is a Danish classically trained violinist currently living in San Francisco. After touring with jazz bassist Stanley Clarke and an eight year stint plus two Grammy Awards with the jazz string ensemble the Turtle Island Quartet, he is now on his own. His press release states that his new release, Playing The 60s, “draws material from the era evoked by the award-wining series AMC series Mad Men.” I’m not sure how much the series influenced the song selection, but Tolling manages to take an eclectic group of ‘60s material and give them jazz interpretations.
