Maybe you didn’t think blues-rocker Popa Chubby was the type to offer poignant social commentary, but title track “Back to New York City” – and arguably, most of this album – is a rocking response to a full decade passing since the 9/11 attacks…..
Big, Bad and Beautiful - this recorded in the spring of live double album summarizes what Popa Chubby has achieved in the past decade. For ten long years, it is already here that Popa Chubby released a live album. This double live album includes hits from Popa of 'Booty and the Beast' to his anniversary CD 'I'm Feelin' Lucky '. The 27-song live work of Chubbfatha was in March 2015 recorded in France during his' I'm Feelin 'Lucky' tour on which he was accompanied by a great team: Dave Keyes (Keyboard), Francesco Beccaro (bass) and Andrea Beccaro (drums). As a special treat, there is an impromptu mini-set of the band with some Rolling Stones classics. A definitive live release of 55s guitar heroes from NYC!
Every Popa Chubby record is an experience that will never be forgotten. In his latest offering “Emotional Gangster” set for worldwide release March 18, 2022 on the prestigious Dixiefrog label, the Bronx native shows us an emotional side; even though he never lets go of the fire that makes him a star. Timeless classics, like Elmore James’ “Dust My Broom” and Willie Dixon’s “Hoochie Coochie Man, set this 11 track offering deep in the blues The real gems are his original compositions like “Fly Away”, the lament of a father seeing his daughters leave the nest, “Equal Opportunity” with slide guitar leading the advocacy of women’s honor and the timeless story of man and woman on “Why You Wanna Make War” in English and French versions. More than ever Popa is alive and well.
Influenced by blues greats Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Guy, Willie Dixon, and the three Kings (all of whom he name-checks in the aptly titled "Carrying on the Torch of the Blues"), Popa Chubby (aka Ted Horowitz) brazenly ventures into more contemporary waters while remaining true to his rootsy influences and the spirit of the genre. While the hip-hop beats and Chubby's rapping are a little awkward on the album's opening "Daddy Played the Guitar and Mama Was a Disco Queen" (a video of the track is also included as the enhanced CD-ROM portion of the disc), especially as he injects them into a song that starts out as an acoustic ballad, his ragged and incisive slide keep it grounded in familiar territory…….
Popa Chubby's major-label debut album is an inspiring set of energetic, gut-bucket blues-rock, filled with exceptional playing. Chubby has soul, even if he doesn't quite cut it as a songwriter; there aren't many songs that are inventive or memorable. But as an instrumental workout, Booty and the Beast is terrific. Using the blues as a basic foundation, Popa Chubby spins off into new directions, incorporating bits of rock and jazz to his forceful playing. His guitar playing is what makes the album a promising debut.–by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
The In Concert DVD series has spotlighted countless artists recorded live for the German TV show Ohne Filter, and in 2002, it was New York City blues guitarist Popa Chubby's turn to get the In Concert treatment. Backed by a rhythm section comprised of bassist Dave Hamburger and drummer John DiGiulio, the trio hands in a fine hour-long, eight-track performance, recorded on April 3, 1997. Popa Chubby's knack for penning fiery chromatic guitar riffs is evidenced by such tracks as "Trail O' Tears" and "Caffeine and Nicotine," while additional highlights include the up-tempo "Dance the Night Away" and "Angel on my Shoulder," the latter of which showcases both Chubby's guitar skills and soulful vocals. The Popa Chubby edition of In Concert is recommended to fans of modern day, gritty blues-rock.
