I can’t actually remember why we decided to do this project other than ask ourself, why had it not been done years ago? let’s do it! Linkwood and Other Lands are well known from their various outings on Firecracker, Night Theatre, The Nuclear Family, Rush Hour, Dekmantel, AOTN and many other labels, both talented musicians and fierce producers. The plan was simple, drop them into the mostly finished Athens of the North studio and cross the streams…

The absence of a television set at their home in Lincoln, NE, led band of brothers Remedy Drive to turn to music at an early age as an outlet for their pent-up creative energies. Growing up, they listened to CCM icon Keith Green, but it wasn't long until siblings David, Paul, Philip, and Daniel Zach discovered rock & roll and began using their free time after school to play music together, eventually forming the Aslan Band in 1998. In time, the Zachs rechristened themselves Remedy Drive, released five independent albums, and toured all over the Midwest, making a name for themselves in the Christian rock scene there. Before signing to Word Records in 2008, the band averaged 200 concerts a year and its albums sold in the tens of thousands, prompting interest from the Christian major. Produced by Ian Eskelin, their national debut, Daylight Is Coming, was issued on August 26, 2008, making an impressive initial appearance in the upper rungs of Billboard's Top Christian Albums chart.

Faithfull was still known primarily as a pop singer when she put out North Country Maid, but this is in fact very close to a pure folk album, with a bit of influence from pop, rock, blues, and jazz. Largely overlooked even by Faithfull fans, it's actually a quite respectable effort, and probably her best LP (other than greatest-hits compilations) from the time when her voice was still on the high side. Ably backed by sessionmen including guitarists Jon Mark and Jim Sullivan, she interprets mostly traditional material on this record, including "She Moved Through the Fair," "Wild Mountain Thyme," "Sally Free and Easy," and "Scarborough Fair." There are some mid-'60s covers too, though, including Donovan's "Sunny Goodge Street" and Tom Paxton's "Last Thing on My Mind"…

Alex North had his roots in the American stage but achieved his greatest fame in the epic film genre: his scores for Spartacus (1960), Cleopatra (1963) and The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965) are beloved for their scope and grandeur. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) was to be another North epic but ended up with Stanley Kubrick's selections of classical music. Later in 1968 North was able to use some of his 2001 ideas in M-G-M's The Shoes of the Fisherman, a colossal modern-day tale about the first Russian Pope. The Shoes of the Fisherman was based on a novel by Morris L. West and starred Anthony Quinn as Kiril Lakota, a political prisoner who rejoins the Vatican after his release. When the Pope dies, Kiril emerges as an unlikely successor, and must set the course for the Vatican's role in a current world crisis. The film also starred Laurence Olivier as the Soviet Premier, David Janssen as an American journalist, and Oskar Werner as a Jesuit philosopher and friend of Kiril's.

Composer Alex North was nominated for an Oscar 15 times but never won until he was given the lifetime achievement award in 1986. Among his many compositions are the soundtracks for Spartacus, Cleopatra, The Agony & The Ecstacy, and this 1958 documentary produced for the widescreen Cinerama theaters. Originally recorded in Cinerama 7-track sound, this soundtrack is a large and sweeping score using native rhythms and moods. It's grand and ornate, as if North was painting a portrait of his impressions of the islands of the South Seas. His brush: the baton. His canvas: the 97 piece Cinerama Symphony Orchestra.

In this first ever survey of the music of this war torn region, Michael Church lifts the veil on a vibrant musical tradition. The small but troubled Republic of Chechnya is a member of the Russian Federation, located in the North Caucasus Mountains between the Black and Caspian Seas. With a population of a little more that one million, its fierce fight for independence has kept it in the news and kept visitors out. A beautiful but harsh mountainous landscape has made for a traditionally hard and resilient people whose culture has rarely reached the outside world. Michael Church has recorded and compiled the stunning music on this disc partly in Chechnya itself and was held by the Russian police for his efforts. Some of the tracks are love songs and circle dances, others are living history, accompanied by balalaika, violin, drum and accordion, these songs celebrate heroes and denounce genocidal crime.(Amazon)

It is an important moment in the life of a singer when she is able to confront the standard repertory. After years spent studying theatre and music in Shakespeare's England under the guidance of musicologist Philip Brett, Jill Feldman recorded two programmes of Henry Purcell's music in 1992, reissued here as a double CD. Many of the Ayres and Songs from Orpheus Britannicus are connected to the English theatrical tradition. In the earliest piece on this CD, From Silent Shades , and the latest, From Rosy Bow'rs , we hear one theatrical tradition placing the voice of truth in the mouth of a madman.
