The Trip were but one of many Italian bands combining rock, classical, jazz, pop and folk to produce what is now known as the Italian rock renaissance. They are another three man classical rock band in the realm of the Nice and Le Orme. All four of their albums are completely different and bear the stamp of another international group or movement. "Caronte" was considered their best album by psych collectors. On their third, "Atlantide", The Trip looks squarely at Emerson, Lake & Palmer for inspiration. The both are recommended to ELP or Le Orme fans.

This was released on Future Primitive's own label and unlike the disc by Cut Chemist and Shortkut, this one was released without a track listing. All songs are "Untitled" but elements can be figured out for those with good ears.

After the release of Trip Shakepeare’s debut—Applehead Man—band leader Matt Wilson’s brother, Grammy® winning songwriter Dan Wilson joined the fold as a permanent member. The original trio became a quartet and self-released Are You Shakespearienced? in 1988. Omnivore is pleased to continue following the legacy of Trip Shakespeare with a reissue of the band’s 2nd album—which now includes 9 bonus tracks, 8 previously unissued. Are You Shakespearienced? (co-produced by the band’s John Munson) will be released in a digipak with liner notes from Jon Niccum (author of The Worst Gig), and previously unseen photos. The LP (first pressing on translucent green vinyl, with black to follow) contains the original nine tracks, liners and photos, and a download card for the entire CD program. Are You Shakespearienced? would find Trip Shakespeare not only being courted by the major labels, but eventually signing to A&M Records. Later, John Munson and Dan Wilson would go on to form Semisonic, but now is the time to get Shakespearienced!

Once upon a time, on January 11th 2019 (pre-plague), a rag-tag group of Scottish musical ne’er-do-wells flew to a fancy-ass studio in Sweden on an impossible mission to record, in two whole days, an album of the only eleven songs they could actually play. Were it not for a series of mishaps, bad calls, vodka, general tomfoolery (those f****** gloves!) and one near-death experience, they might just about have managed it too.

Trip Shakespeare unfortunately went unnoticed in their time and more unfortunately have remained in obscurity, but they were lucky enough to record in a time when major labels took greater chances with music and would more often indulge ambitious projects. Lulu is the group's defining set, a result of inspired and talented musicians with an expense account to afford their aspirations and enough sense to exploit it appropriately. Why then did this record go through the ringer almost completely unnoticed and why did the reviews the album received tend to be overly critical? Part of the answer has to do with the timing of its release. 1991 was the great embrasure of the grunge movement when Nirvana's Nevermind set the decade-long trend for the popular music charts. The release of a melodically complex and romantic pop masterpiece with lush vocals was entertained by neither the critics nor the masses, and no doubt A&M had lost much of the majesty they found in Trip Shakespeare when they were signed two years previous, which is a shame since Shakespeare's leader, Matt Wilson, was at the height of his poetic optimism and the melodic hooks he wrote with his brother Dan Wilson are complex, plentiful, and on par with the classics of pop music's innovation.
