After Bach's Goldberg Variations, which won him worldwide honours (including a "Diapason d'Or"), Hannes Minnaar challenges and confronts what has become a "classic" of the 20th century repertoire: Shostakovich's Preludes and Fugues, composed in 1951. Here again, the qualities of his pianism, for which he is recognised as one of the leading musicians of our time, come under the spotlight: the diversity of touch and the suppleness between tension and tranquillity to characterise every Prelude and Fugue, the precision of tone, the lack of any affectation, a natural finesse in phrasing and articulation, and a familiarity with the score going hand in hand with a freshness that conjures a sense of improvisation. Here we encounter a new landmark in the crowded field of interpretations of this wonderful music.

These preludes and fugures by Shostakovich are not the easiest in the world for interpretation. Think a Slavic Bach. It is unfair to call these works "modern" and it's not just because they are with the confines of a Medieval form. But sometimes the listener will catch something that is reminiscent of 20th centyury Soviet music. These works are miniatures - a form totally at odds with the usual way we consider the composer. Tatiana Nikolayeva is simply brilliant in her interpretation - the clarity is startling. It may take a while but this is a recording that appreciates the more it is heard.

Dmitri Shostakovich's epic series of preludes and fugues for solo piano was inspired by the very composer whom you would immediately suspect – Johann Sebastian Bach. Indeed, the Russian composer was motivated to write this huge work after a visit to Bach's home city Leipzig in 1950; and, in fact, it resurrects the premise behind Bach's "The Well-Tempered Clavier," providing one prelude and fugue for every major and minor key.

The distinguished Soviet pianist Tatiana Nikolayeva is a name familiar to many as one of the greatest forces behind the wealth of piano talent to flood from the former Soviet Union during the twentieth century.
She was born on 4 May 1924 and began playing the piano at the age of three, subsequently entering the Moscow Conservatoire to study with Alexander Goldenweiser and Yevgeny Golubev. She retained her close connection with the Moscow Conservatoire all her life. Indeed, her name was inscribed twice on the marble Roll of Honour there, first as a pianist, then as a composer.

Written in 1950-51, Shostakovich's 24 Preludes and Fugues are an obvious answer to those who know you, especially since the composer got there after being a jury in the first edition of the competition, You know in Leipzig. For this contest, the young Tatiana Nikolayeva won the prizes and the votes, and it was for her that Shostakovich conceived her own cycle. Unlike the Preludes and Fugues by Bach (here, cited here), which follow each other by following the "suite of the fifths" with alternating major and minor tones according to their relative harmonic relations. In other words, if the first pair is in C major, the second is in C minor, C minor, G major, C major. While in Le Clavier well tempered, the first is in C major, the second in C minor, the third in C sharp major, rising one semitone chromatic each time. Neither system has more validity than the other, of course; What matters is the architectural rigor, the foundation of the idea.

Firma Melodiya presents a recording of Dmitri Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes and Fugues performed by Tatiana Nikolayeva. Shostakovich came up with an idea of a polyphonic cycle in 1950 after he took part in the events dedicated to the 200th anniversary of J.S. Bach’s death in Leipzig. As a jury member of the International Piano Competition for the best performance of Bach’s music, Shostakovich was a witness of an unconditional triumph of the young Soviet pianist Tatiana Nikolayeva who won the first prize. Upon finishing the new opus in a surprisingly short period of time (October 1950 to February 1951), Shostakovich dedicated it to Nikolayeva who performed it for the first time in 1952 in Leningrad. Since then the 24 Preludes and Fugues have been played by many pianists, but Tatiana Nikolayeva’s interpretation is still considered a model one. Tatiana Nikolayeva made this recording of Dmitri Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes and Fugues in 1987.

I set myself the challenge of writing a book of 24 preludes and fugues in all the major and minor keys and I approached family, friends, and several institutions I had been associated with, to commission a prelude and fugue each, with many of the resultant commissioners asking for references to pieces of music that had a special meaning for them, a request that I tried to follow through wherever possible. Within a very short space of time, I realised just what a task I had set myself. The project took me 8 years to complete, and it was not until 2019 that I finally put the finishing touches to the concluding B minor Fugue.

The pairing of music and musician in this exquisite recording is so serendipitous, it is almost as if Keith Jarrett were playing one of his sweeping improvisations. He is not, of course; this is Shostakovich's unmistakable voice, and it is speaks in wide-ranging profundity. Each listening takes me deeper, and exposes things I had not heard before: one of my all-time favorite recordings.
