This live compilation contains tracks from at least three separate concerts, all taped without authorization as Brubeck was exclusively a Columbia artist during this time frame. "Some Day My Prince Will Come," a Disney-associated tune that Brubeck introduced to the jazz world, fares well here, with the pianist only lightly comping behind Paul Desmond's alto sax solo; while Brubeck's dramatic "Forty Days" is as formidable as any of its commercial recordings. "Summer Song" is actually the beautiful Brubeck ballad "Softly, William, Softly." Several tracks from the Take Five Live CD are repeated here, complete with their incorrect titles and poor sound. The one track featuring Gerry Mulligan likely comes from a 1968 appearance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival; though it is marred by feedback from the on-stage monitors, it is worth hearing…

“The 3D Classical Collection goes one step further: each track completely submerges the listener in the orchestral sound experience. What could be more exciting than to step into the midst of the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Abbey Road, with the young and talented Ben Gernon on the conductor’s podium? This new dimension in sound reproduction opens up creative perspectives that we look forward to exploring in the coming years”

The Baltic Sea Philharmonic’s latest album Sleeping Beauty will be released on 13 November. The new Sony Classical recording sees Kristjan Järvi conducting the orchestra in his own arrangement of Tchaikovksy’s fairytale ballet Sleeping Beauty. Condensing and transforming the near three-hour score into a dramatic symphony of around 70 minutes, Järvi gives new life to this most iconic of theatre music compositions. The musicians of the Baltic Sea Philharmonic performed this version of Sleeping Beauty entirely from memory during their March 2019 ‘Nordic Pulse’ tour of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Russia, and the album was recorded in St. Petersburg at the end of the tour. Playing the score by heart transformed the musicians into storytellers who felt like they were telling the fairytale for the first time.

Every now and then Hendrik Weber may feel at home as a tourist, as restless as he tigers under the name Pantha du Prince around the globe. Between the journeys it is then necessary to enjoy or endure different states: the posteuphoric high, the jet lag verpeiltheit, the general fatigue. Music helps and heals. The new "Coming Home" issue is a musical diary that expresses Weber's gentle and contemplative temperament between traveling through the songs of others. It is favorite music that has helped Hendrik Weber, in his own words, not to lose himself, to remedies against the dispersion and Lifesaver songs in the best sense.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky 7 May 1840 – 6 November 1893 was a Russian composer of the Romantic period. He was the first Russian composer whose music would make a lasting impression internationally. He wrote some of the most popular concert and theatrical music in the current classical repertoire, including the ballets Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, the 1812 Overture, his First Piano Concerto, several symphonies, and the opera Eugene Onegin.
Although musically precocious, Tchaikovsky was educated for a career as a civil servant. There was scant opportunity for a musical career in Russia at the time and no system of public music education. When an opportunity for such an education arose, he entered the nascent Saint Petersburg Conservatory, from which he graduated in 1865. The formal Western-oriented teaching that he received there set him apart from composers of the contemporary nationalist movement embodied by the Russian composers of The Five with whom his professional relationship was mixed.

Produced by the legendary T Bone Burnett, 'We Walk This Road' continues the Sacred Steel tradition for which Robert Randolph has earned wide praise, including the New York Times, which applauds 'his rip-roaring virtuosity and his gift for making his instrument sing without a word.' Throughout the recording of 'We Walk This Road,' Randolph and Burnett worked closely together as archivists, discovering songs-decade by decade-from the 20th century American music canon. The songs they uncovered, ranging from blues and rock to field recordings and gospel, serve as the inspiration for the 11 songs on 'We Walk This Road.' Recorded at the Village Recorders and Electro Magnetic Studio, the album includes 'If I Had My Way' (featuring Ben Harper), 'Salvation' (featuring Leon Russell), and reinterpretations of Prince's 'Walk Don't Walk,' Bob Dylan's 'Shot Of Love,' (featuring Jim Keltner, who played drums on the original version) and John Lennon's 'I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier Mama' (featuring Doyle Bramhall II).

Some nine years after Miles Davis’ untimely death, Columbia Records is still repackaging his recorded legacy. The most recent efforts in this area have been made available both on compact disc and in 180-gram vinyl versions by way of Mosaic Records. It is the latter edition that this review is based on, though it should be noted that basically the only difference between the two sets, besides the presentation medium, is that Mosaic’s package is a 12 x 12 box with an album-sized booklet accompanying the records.
