Prince Rogers Nelson (born June 7, 1958) is an American musician. He performs under the mononym of Prince but has also been known by various other names, most notably the unpronounceable symbol which he used as his stage name between 1993 and 2000. During this period, he was usually referred to as The artist formerly known as Prince. Prince is a songwriter and musician, having released several hundred songs both under his own name and with other artists. He has won seven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe, and an Academy Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the first year he was eligible in 2004. Rolling Stone ranked Prince #28 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time in 2008. Prince's musical palette covers many musical genres including R&B, soul, funk, rock, blues, new wave, psychedelia, folk, jazz and hip hop. Some of his influences are Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Sly & the Family Stone, Curtis Mayfield, Parliament-Funkadelic, Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, Joni Mitchell, the Beatles, Duke Ellington and Miles Davis. The distinctive characteristics of his early-to-mid 1980s work, such as sparse and industrial-sounding drum machine arrangements and the use of synthesizer riffs to serve the role traditionally occupied by horn riffs in earlier R&B, funk and soul music, were called the "Minneapolis sound" (a hybrid mixture of funk, rock, pop, R&B & new wave) and have proved very influentia

No other artist of the rock & roll era compares to Prince. He was the rare combination of a visionary pop conceptualist and master musician who could capture the sounds he imagined, a quality that fueled his remarkable success in the 1980s. Ideas came to Prince so quickly, they couldn't be contained on his own records, either with or without his backing band the Revolution.

Few artists have created a body of work as rich and varied as Prince. During the '80s, he emerged as one of the most singular talents of the rock & roll era, capable of seamlessly tying together pop, funk, folk, and rock. Not only did he release a series of groundbreaking albums; he toured frequently, produced albums and wrote songs for many other artists, and recorded hundreds of songs that still lie unreleased in his vaults. With each album he released, Prince has shown remarkable stylistic growth and musical diversity, constantly experimenting with different sounds, textures, and genres.

Prince’s albums Chaos and Disorder and Emancipation, his first LP after leaving Warner Bros., will be available on vinyl for the first time and on CD for the first time in two decades. The estate is also reissuing The VERSACE Experience (PRELUDE 2 GOLD), a collection of music handed out to attendees at Versace’s runway show during Paris Fashion Week in 1995. Originally a limited-edition cassette, the album features remixes of songs that would appear on The Gold Experience and unreleased music from Prince’s backing band The New Power Generation, side project NPG Orchestra, and short-lived jazz fusion band Madhouse.

Recorded in 1983 at Prince's Kiowa Trail home studio in Chanhassen, MN & engineered by Don Batts, Piano & A Microphone 1983 is a nine track, 35-minute album features a previously unreleased home studio cassette recording of Prince at his piano. The Deluxe CD+LP format will include a 12" booklet featuring brand new liner notes written by Prince's then engineer Don Batts, as well as candid shots of Prince including never before seen images. The private rehearsal provides a rare, intimate glimpse into Prince s creative process as he worked through songs which include 17 Days and Purple Rain (neither of which would be released until 1984), a cover of Joni Mitchell's A Case Of You, Strange Relationship (not released until 1987 on his critically acclaimed Sign O' The Times album), and International Lover.

Prince was shooting for the top of the charts with Graffiti Bridge, and he missed. The movie was a disaster, causing the soundtrack to sell very poorly. Despite its poor showing, Graffiti Bridge is not a bad album; in fact, it's often very good. Prince wrote all of the songs, but only performed a little over half the tracks, leaving the rest for The Time, Mavis Staples, and Tevin Campbell. With the exception of The Time's slamming "Release It" and Campbell's "Round and Round," the best songs are the ones Prince performed himself. The George Clinton collaboration "We Can Funk," the psycho-blues of "The Question of U," the sinewy single "Thieves in the Temple," and the pop/rock of "Can't Stop This Feeling I Got," "Tick, Tick, Bang," and "Elephants & Flowers" make Graffiti Bridge a thoroughly enjoyable listen.

In 1979, Prince created a band with André Cymone on bass, Dez Dickerson on guitar, Gayle Chapman and Doctor Fink on keyboards, and Bobby Z. on drums. Their first show was at the Capri Theater on January 5, 1979. Warner Bros. executives attended the show but decided that Prince and the band needed more time to develop his music. In October 1979, Prince released the album Prince, which was No. 4 on the Billboard Top R&B/Black Albums charts and No. 22 on the Billboard 200, and went platinum. It contained two R&B hits: ‘Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?’ and ‘I Wanna Be Your Lover’, which sold over a million copies, and reached No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 for two weeks on the Hot Soul Singles chart. Prince performed both these songs on January 26, 1980, on American Bandstand.

Even early in the year, it's safe to say Will Oldham has made what will surely be one of the best country records of 2025. Recorded in Nashville, The Purple Bird was produced by David "Ferg" Ferguson (press materials note it's only the second time in his career that Oldham has officially worked with another producer), who engineered Johnny Cash's 2000 cover of Bonnie "Prince" Billy's "I See a Darkness"—and who told Oldham this time around, "I don't wanna do a country record, just do your shit, Will." As it turns out, Oldham's latest shit is country. Co-written with Tommy Prine, "Tonight With the Dogs I'm Sleeping" would've been a hit in another era. Loaded with jug-band mischief—including comedic horns and woozy fiddle—it's as laidback as can be and full of fun wordplay, so it feels almost like a tribute to Tommy's dad, the late Americana icon John Prine: "Sitting at the bar with a drink or two/ Telephone rings and it's you know who/ You know who is gonna get his ass chewed tonight.
