Its eighth album, in 1974, Procol Harum had weathered the departure of several key members. The band's previous release, GRAND HOTEL, was its first after the departure of guitarist Robin Trower. EXOTIC BIRDS & FRUIT is a more polished affair and a return to form for the band. The songs by pianist/singer Gary Brooker and lyricist Keith Reid possess the thrilling tensions that result from combining grandeur and lushness with R&B-based soulfulness. As always, drummer B.J. Wilson is a powerful yet unassuming presence, with a signature style that adds just the right amount of flair to the propulsiveness. The set is full of memorable songs, including the powerful opening number, "Nothing But the Truth," the cabaret-like "Beyond the Pale," and the anthemic and relentless "The Idol."

This DVD was filmed over two spectacular concerts held in the grounds of Ledreborg Castle in Denmark in August 2006. The band were accompanied throughout by the Danish National Concert Orchestra and Choir and these epic songs really benefit from the full symphonic arrangements they receive. Bonus Features Six previously unreleased live tracks from a 1974 Danish TV special.
In August 2006, British rockers Procol Harum rocked the grounds of Denmark's Ledreborg Castle in two spectacular open-air concerts. Backed by the Danish National Concert Orchestra and Choir, the band performed a selection of hits from their outstanding 40+ year career.

This album by Procol Harum represents a good comeback to the music industry as die hard fans still can enjoy the style of the band's original sounds through Gary Brooker's good voice and Mathew Fisher's organ work.

What is most interesting about this two-disc set, which contains the first four albums of Procol Harum in their entirety, is the absence of two of the group's biggest and best songs, "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and "Homburg," both of which were originally issued as singles only in the U.K. Since both songs are available on other compilations that cover this same time period, along with most of the key tracks here, it is difficult to recommend this release to anyone but collectors.
