Quin Occidente

Live at Pro Musica was recorded just over a year ago on March 1, 2020. While it seemed almost routine at the time to gather together in a small space for an intimate afternoon concert, this recording soon stood as an artifact of a very different time. Each one of the musicians involved has since remarked on how great a memory the show has become, and it has helped us all get through a troubling year to be able to look towards the future with hope for more experiences just like it on the horizon.

"My favorite albums have always been the ones that take the listener on a journey. I aim to do that, to create worlds with my albums - universes. I wanted The Other Side of Time to unfold like a story and I've continued that process with The Shadows and The Light. I'm influenced by so many different styles of creative music and I like to try and bring all those influences into harmony on these records. There is long-form and short-form composition.

Big percussive orgy for this double album by Quin Kirchner. With the Shadows and the Light, the Chicago drummer mixes original compositions and meticulously chosen covers, to better identify those who influenced him as Carla Bley (King Korn), Sun Ra (Sahara) or Frank Foster (at this Point in time that Elvin Jones had slipped on his Prime Element).

Quin Kirchner was forging a musical career in New Orleans at the time of Hurricane Katrina. Despite his house being ruined, he held off from leaving until the last moment due to gig commitments. With a support system of family and friends back in Chicago, Kirchner returned home where his percussive skills became key in the city's music scene.
