5 CDs of the Finest, most Intimate, Surprising, and Captivating Content From Joni’s Unmined 1968-1971 Archives-The tracks on Archives Vol II have been sequenced chronologically to follow Mitchell in real time through one of the most creative periods of her career. The collection uncovers several unreleased Mitchell originals, including “Jesus” recorded in 1969 at her friend Jane Lurie’s New York apartment in Chelsea, which also served as the setting for the song “Chelsea Morning.” Other highlights include Mitchell’s performance at Le Hibou Coffee House in Ottawa on March 19, 1968 that was recorded by Jimi Hendrix and a concert at the Paris Theatre in London on October 29, 1970 that was broadcast on the BBC. The latter includes several songs destined to appear on Blue the following year: “Carey,” “River” and “My Old Man.” In addition, singer-songwriter James Taylor joined Mitchell to perform with her during the second half of the show.

Although little know, the literature for two violins has an ancient history, that on one side refers to the educational purpose of playing together and reciprocally li-stening to each other, and on the other side refers to the folk tradition. The compositions of this album truly move within all these different perspectives: they are in part folk music pieces, in part pieces with a didactic aim, but above all they are dialogs with a high chamber music value. Bartók and Prokofiev, with the Fortyfour duets and the Sonata for two violins gifted us with two cornerstones of the literature for these instruments in the narrow space of two years, 1931 and 1932, opening this repertoire to new textures and new languages.

James Carr cements his place in the pantheon of great soul singers with a series of simply jaw-dropping singles. On this volume we have You Got My Mind Messed Up, Love Attack and Pouring Water On A Drowning Man before we get to Dark End Of The Street, the song that not only defined him, but quite possibly the whole southern soul genre. Volume Two is not just James Carr: the Ovations made amazing 45s at this period of the labels history, as did soul man Spencer Wiggins, who serves up the sublime Uptight Good Woman, among others. Other brilliant slices of southern soul featured are from Percy Millem, Eddie Jefferson, George (Jackson) and (Dan) Greer and Barbara Perry.
