What happens when a soundtrack is taken from a film and given a life on its own? When two Icelandic composers Páll Ragnar Pálsson and Eðvarð Egilsson finished scoring Quake, a psychological family drama, they were not ready to stop just there. What followed was a voyage of musical discoveries as they allowed for new ideas to enter the creative space. Just as a plant spread itself over the whole garden, cues from the movie scenes become independent, mature songs. The soundscape dwells on the border of acoustic and electronic and drifts from song-based to textural, from atmospheric to cinematic with lustrous cello in the foreground.

Selected by ECHO (the European Concert Hall Organisation) as one of its Rising Stars of the 2009/10 season, the Swedish clarinettist Emil Jonason has become increasingly visible on the international music scene. For his first disc on the BIS label he has chosen to record a concerto written for him by his compatriot Christian Lindberg, composer, conductor and legendary trombonist. As Lindberg remarks in his own note on the work, the soloist was involved at all stages of the compositional process.

At the outset, composer Christian Lindberg decided to associate clarinettist Emil Jonason in all phases of his writing process - from the first embryos that would become the main themes of the concerto, to the most subtle details of the two Cadences solistes, which he conceived at the very end. The title of the work, The Fantastic Dreams of Mr Grönstedt, would have been inspired, according to Lindberg, by the name of a Swedish cognac from the Grönstedt brand founded in 1846 on the one hand by the character of the clarinettist Emil Jonason on the other hand. In these mysterious dreams, one sees an innocent character who is preparing for a spring ball, or who meets a certain Lisa dressed in his magic mantle, among other fantasies.
