En 1941, le comte de Damville, un officier démobilisé, retrouve son village jurassien, occupé par les Allemands. Il y retrouve son épouse, qui, comme le docteur et les instituteurs, fait désormais partie d'un réseau de la Résistance. L'arrivée de parachutistes anglais auxquels il va falloir faire traverser la ligne de démarcation incitera le comte à s'impliquer.

(A small village in the Jura is divided by the river Loue which marks the line of demarcation between Nazi occupied France and freedom. A French officer, Pierre, is released by the Nazi soldiers to find his chateau converted into a German command centre. Whilst he is obliged to co-operate with the enemy, his wife Mary plays a hand in supporting the French resistance. The Nazis step up their activity against the resistance, insisting that any who attempt to cross the line of demarcation will be shot. When his wife is arrested, Pierre decides to switch his allegiance…)

Philippe, 25 ans, a quitté Orléans pour rejoindre sa soeur Muriel, qui vit à Arcachon. Le matin de son arrivée, il croise dans l'immeuble la voisine de Muriel, Betty, qui a emménagé il y a peu de temps. A tout juste 20 ans, la jeune fille est déjà mère d'un petit garçon, Damien, psychologiquement perturbé. Elle a accepté un travail peu gratifiant dans une papeterie afin de gagner sa vie et quitter au plus vite le domicile de ses parents, avec lesquels elle entretient des relations conflictuelles. Quant à Philippe, il se présente bientôt dans un bar pour une place de serveur, mais provoque le patron quelques heures à peine après avoir été embauché…
