The music of Gustav Mahler, the Late Romantic composer on the threshold of modernity, has been a firm part of the repertoire of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks ever since the early 1960s, when the orchestra's Mahler tradition was established by its former chief conductor Rafael Kubelik. BR-KLASSIK has already released Mahler's First (as part of an audiobook CD) and Seventh Symphonies with Mariss Jansons, as well as the Ninth with Bernard Haitink. The young Canadian conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin is making his debut here on the BR-KLASSIK label with Mahler's First Symphony.

Matthias Schinkopf, Sohn zweier Musikerzieher, gewann zwischen seinem achten und zwölften Lebensjahr mehrfach Preise beim Musikwettbewerb "Jugend Musiziert" im Fach Blockflöte. Seit seinem 13ten Lebensjahr spielt er Saxophon und absolvierte zunächst ein klassisches Saxophonstudium an der Hochschule für Künste in Bremen bei Hermann Cordes und danach an der Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover im Bereich Jazz-Rock-Pop bei Martin Classen, wo er sein Studium mit Diplom abschloss. Seitdem ist er als freischaffender Musiker in diversen Ensembles, Bands, Orchestern und Theatern international tätig.

On his fourth recording for harmonia mundi, GRAMMY-nominated conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya leads the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra in an all-orchestral program featuring Witold Lutoslawski's Concerto for Orchestra and Arnold Schoenberg's orchestration of Brahms's Piano Quartet No.1. With its use of folk melodies to generate tremendous momentum and dramatic impact, the Concerto for Orchestra established Lutoslawski as Poland's leading contemporary composer. Harth-Bedoya couples this powerful and complex score with Schoenberg's rich and colorful arrangement of one of Brahms's most popular chamber works.

Following his highly acclaimed surveys of the piano works of Beethoven and Schubert, British pianist Paul Lewis turns to the romantic period and Brahms's mighty D minor Piano Concerto. Lewis performed the work across Europe in 2014 and in the US for his New York Philharmonic debut. In a review of that concert, New York Times critic Anthony Tomassini praised Lewis for his, "majestic and insightful performance," adding, "I have seldom heard the contrasting theme, which sounds like an affirming chorale, played with such elegant shaping of inner voices." For this new recording, Lewis is accompanied by Daniel Harding leading the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Harri Ahmas is a bassoon (Fagott) player in the Lahti SO, and, as such, he has participated in countless recordings for us. He has also aranged a lot of music included in that orchestra's records of Finnish Psalms without singing - an as surprising as overwhelming sales success story).
