Valley of Rain was Tucson’s Giant Sand’s debut album recorded in 1983, and eventually released by 1985. It included Howe Gelb on vocals, guitar and Winston Watson on drums for most of it, Tommy Larkins on drums for some of it and Scott Garber on fretless bass for all of it.

Influential alt country band whose sound evolved into a crisp mix of swing, country, rock and beatnik lyricism. Giant Sand was the primary outlet for the stylistic curveballs and sun-damaged songcraft of Howe Gelb, a Pennsylvania-born singer/guitarist who formed the four-piece Giant Sandworms after relocating to Tuscon, Arizona in the mid-'70s. After releasing the EP Will Wallow and Roam After the Ruin in 1980, Gelb fired everyone but bassist Scott Gerber (although founding guitarist Rainer Ptacek returned to the fold many times in the future) and started over as simply Giant Sand, essentially a one-man band backed by a revolving cast of players.

After recording two unsuccessful albums with the Christian rock group White Heart during the early '80s, guitarist/vocalist Dann Huff found refuge in session work, eventually becoming one of the most requested, reliable, and versatile players in the business. But after years backing everyone from Michael Jackson to Amy Grant, Huff decided to give it one more go fronting his own band, forming Giant with his brother David on drums, Alan Pasqua on keyboards, and Mike Brignardello on bass.
