Genre: Jazz | Label: Eremite Records

On Magnetoception, Joshua Abrams is back exploring new contexts for the guimbri, the three-stringed north African bass lute at the heart of his Eremite recordings Natural Information (2010) and Represencing (2012). The artist's first large-scale work on vinyl, Magnetoception began as a commission by Eremite for Abrams to make a double LP based in extended performances by an ensemble of Abrams, guitarists Emmett Kelly and Jeff Parker, and drummer Hamid Drake. The group recorded the nucleus of Magnetoception live to two-track, circled around vintage Neumanns and a woodstove in a Berwyn, Illinois attic in February 2013.

Originally from Colorado, Rhonda studied piano as a child for a few years before changing her musical focus to the flute. As an adult, she moved back to the piano where she found greater freedom to express herself. She currently lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and two dogs. Rhonda's piano compositions are largely an expression of her personal journey. She takes inspiration from her spiritual life, special relationships and the beauty and mystery of nature. She has often been told her music "paints pictures" and "tells stories". Her musical influences include George Winston, David Nevue, Dan Fogelberg, Dougie Maclean, Bach, Teleman and Celtic folk music. She has written original music for weddings and her music has been requested for use by dance and skating choreographers, massage therapists and photographers.

Pianist Yuja Wang and composer/conductor Teddy Abrams were classmates at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia and had long wanted to work together. The sympathy shows in this 2023 Deutsche Grammophon release, which perhaps turned out even better than the performers had hoped. Abrams' 11-movement Piano Concerto is a standout among the jazz-flavored works that crowd American concert programs (and increasingly those beyond) every year. The work is neither simply swing jazz transferred to an orchestral medium nor a classical piece that uses jazz as a flavoring.
