While her parents were not musicians, she was exposed to a huge variety of music in her early home environment, often via radio, and enjoyed a diversity of singers from Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Edith Piaf to Hank Williams and Elvis Presley ; Maria Callas was a particular inspiration and intriguingly Linda claimed that: I learn more about singing rock n roll from listening to Maria Callas records than I ever did from listening to pop music……she s the greatest chick singer ever.

Released in 1976, Etta Is Betta Than Evvah! was the final album of Etta James' tumultuous 16-year tenure at Chess Records. The album is issued here on CD for the first time, together with 10 bonus titles from the mid-70s. The self-produced opener, 'Woman (Shake Your Booty)', is a funky rewrite of a song Etta had recorded, as 'W.O.M.A.N', for Modern in 1955 and again for Chess in 1971. 'Only A Fool' and Randy Newman's 'Leave Your Hat On' had been released previously on 1973's Etta James album. By 1976 Chess Records had been purchased by All Platinum, at whose New Jersey studio the bulk of Etta Is Betta Than Evvah! was recorded with former Motown baritone sax hero Mike Terry producing.

"Silk Electric" is a 1982 album released by American entertainer Diana Ross on the RCA label. It reached #27 on the US Billboard 200 (#5 R&B), #33 in the UK Albums Chart and the Top 20 in Sweden, Norway and the Netherlands. The album cover was designed by Andy Warhol. The album contains Ross' Top 10, Grammy-nominated single, "Muscles", which was produced and written by Michael Jackson. All other tracks were produced by Ross. The song "I Am Me" is incorrectly listed as written by Cindy Birdsong instead of Janie Bradford on the Diana Ross Greatest Hits - The RCA Years compilation album. The album was certified Gold in the US and Silver in the UK.

An air of inquiry suffuses Laura Marling's third album, a mood of experimentation as cerebral as it is playful. Opening song The Muse is like nothing she has released before: swaggering and brassy, with her voice pulling angular shapes across saloon-jazz piano and tight brush drums. Salinas and Rest in the Bed are like miniature western movies, with spit and sawdust in the guitar and banjo lines, melodrama in the backing vocals and Marling squinting at a relentless sun as her characters glare fate in the face. As on last year's I Speak Because I Can, Marling can sound curiously dispassionate, slurring the chorus of Don't Ask Me Why, maintaining a studied cool at the start of Sophia as she murmurs: "Where I have been lately is no concern of yours." But when Sophia unfurls into a glowing country romp, the distance between her and us suddenly shrinks – and the feeling is exhilarating.
