Few years ago I expected the return of the legendary Anesthesia (shame on you if you don’t know who they are) and something started to happen but all of a sudden unexpected change has occured. Vocalist and bass guitarist had to move to Great Britain with his family and the hopes of reuniting Anesthesia are vanished. For now.

2008 four CD box set containing all of brother Ray's released recordings between 1949 and 1956. 94 tracks include classics such as 'Mess Around', 'I Got A Woman' and 'Hallelujah, I Love Her So'. This landmark set comes with a 44 page booklet that tells the story of this genius and contains session details and rare period photos. He was Ray Charles, a hero to the black community of such exalted status that no other popular entertainer, with the possible exception of Louis Armstrong, has ever achieved. Charles was the Bishop, the Right Reverend, The High Priest of Soul. Atlantic Records proclaimed him the Genius, a title he has born for over fifty years. As a singer who seduced the world with his voice, composer, bandleader, arranger, pianist, alto saxophonist, record producer and performer whose marriage of gospel and R & B helped prepare the basis for soul music, his prolific work deserves no other praise.

My overriding goal during my treasured 31 years as conductor of BYU Singers was to give both students and audiences experiences that would fulfill and stretch their musical sensibilities. It was not difficult finding concert literature to accomplish part of this goal, but it was in my desire to balance the program that I experienced frustration. I was fully aware that an element of “lighter,” more entertainment-oriented pieces was needed to balance our programs. But finding pieces and—even more— arrangements of those pieces worthy of the vocal and musical abilities of the extra- ordinary students in the choir was virtually impossible. So I decided to write my own arrangements for the choir.

While the songs on Together We're Heavy can be listened to individually (in fact, my first experience with it was a single on a sampler disc in Paste magazine), listening to all ten straight will take you back twenty or thirty years. DeLaughter's slightly whiny lead vocals resemble Roger Waters, even if his lyrics are the antithesis of Waters' angst, despair and loathing, while the music harkens to Genesis' style right after Peter Gabriel's departure.

Gil Scott-Heron - I'm New Here (2010) {XL Recordings}

I’m New Here is a shock. It’s a wallop filled with big nasty beats, a wide range of sonic atmospheres, and more — sometimes unintentional — autobiographical intimacy than we’ve heard from Gil Scott-Heron than ever before. Produced by XL Recordings head Richard Russell, I’m New Here is his first record in 16 years. It is a scant 28 minutes and doesn’t need to be a second longer. It's unlike anything he’s previously recorded, though there is metaphoric precedence in his earliest, largely spoken word albums. Its production pushes forcefully at the margins, and Scott-Heron embraces it without a hint of nostalgia.

9 Sunday evenings the legendary Mac Wiseman sat with his friends Peter Copper and Thomm Jutz and as Mac would tell stories of his life, songs formed in mid-air between them and the musical autobiography of the Hall of Famer took flight. When production began the line formed as the vocalists and musicians from the best of the best came to share their love of the iconic man who sang the song.
