With The Farinelli Manuscript Ann Hallenberg, accompanied by Stefano Aresi and Stile Galante, offers a scintillating reading of the music known to have been sung by the castrato Carlo Broschi during his 23-year stay in Spain (and sent as a present to the Empress Maria Theresa). Described as “a force of nature”, displaying flawless coloratura and a purity of timbre, the Swedish mezzo follows her previous appearance on Glossa with Aresi (a disc devoted to music associated with the later castrato Luigi Marchesi) with a spirited demonstration of the musicality which so attracted Farinelli to listeners at the Spanish court.
For over 40 years, Parisian composer and drummer Patrick Forgas has been working and creating a distinctive take on progressive jazz/rock, and he has been leading Forgas Band Phenomena for over 20 years. The ensemble’s many long time fans certainly know what to expect, as the group’s base of ‘Canterbury sound’ stylings in a orchestrally arranged setting with jazz solos continues here, stronger and with even more maturity than ever…
The album Naissance de l’horizon is thought of as a cyclical film : it begins with an explosion, in quintet, symbolizing the beginnings of matter and life; Passes through different states continuously; And closed in symmetry to the first piece by a rise of hope. The titles linked to each other musically give the album its unity, in the manner of the discs of progressive rock of the Seventies.
Approximately 78 min. Digitally remastered. One of the finest musicians of his era ,Cuban Valdes shows on this disc why his music is now being released all over the world. The two albums on this disc were originally recorded in the mid-sixties. The group consists of Paquito D'Rivera on alto sax and clarinet plus a couple of other horns and a rhythm section plus percussion. The music is obviously Cuban in nature but has a definite western feel on some of the arrangements. Like a lot of Cuban music this is light-hearted jazz, nothing heavy or deep. It is some of the best jazz of it's kind you will ever hear. - Stuart Jefferson
